We love our former U's, well most of them anyway, so thought I'd start a thread where we can keep up with them.
Thought I'd kick things off with a happier moment for Matt Jay in Essex as he scored a long ranger against Chelmsford at the weekend. It wasn't a joyous return though as Torquay shipped two late goals to lose 3-2 after leading 2-0.

Stripes - Yes - We played them in the FA Cup in 1948 (and beat them 1-0) and adopted blue and white stripes after that.
Stadium - No - Their stadium is nothing like ours other than it had 4 sides and blue seats. Their stadium was built by Alfred McAlpine I think there was talk in the 1990s that Alfred McAlpine might build ours too. |  | | |

Samson Tovide (for Fletcher 63) - On for his debut. Straight swap at centre-forward. Gave the ball away needlessly with multiple options ahead of him as Bromley restored their lead. Got in up the right a few minutes later but his return ball to DSF was poor. We’re going a bit easy in light of his lack of a pre-season, but still an afternoon to forget. 4

Former Colchester United forward Gavin Massey has retired. |
FORMER Colchester United favourite Gavin Massey has announced his retirement.
The 33-year-old attacker, who played for the U's between 2012 and 2016, has confirmed he is hanging up his boots.
Writing on social media, Massey said: "After 16 years in the professional game it's definitely the right time to retire from football.
"Football has been such a massive part of my life with having many highs but also many lows.
"From starting out at 6 to making my professional debut at 17, playing 565 games, to winning leagues, to being relegated.
"All great experiences to now pass down to the next generations @masseyfootballacademy "Absolutely loved it. A dream to a reality.
"Thankyou to everyone who's been a part of the journey!"
Massey made 178 league and cup appearances for Colchester during his four-and-a-half year stint with the club, scoring 21 goals.
With his skill, versatility and positive attitude, he quickly endeared himself to Colchester fans after initially arriving at the club as a fresh-faced teenager on loan from Watford in January 2012, snapped up by John Ward.
Massey twice scooped the Colchester United 'Players' Player of the Year' accolade before leaving to join Leyton Orient, in 2016. | |

FORMER U'S: Ex-Colchester United defender signs for National League high fliers:
FORMER Colchester United defender Will Wright has joined National League leaders Boreham Wood.
The 29-year-old joins the Hertfordshire club from Barnet on a three-year deal.
Wright told the Boreham Wood FC website: "It's all very exciting.
"It's obviously a very exciting time for the club, for myself and for the fans.
"Hopefully the club can go one better and hopefully I'm here to help that and we can achieve the obvious goal the club has set out."
Wright joined Colchester from Hitchin Town in 2017 and regularly played for their under-23s under Wayne Brown.
In October 2017, he first joined the U's senior squad for a Football League Trophy match against Gillingham.
He joined Dagenham & Redbridge permanently in summer 2019 after a successful season-long loan, having made no senior appearances for Colchester.
Wright made nearly 150 appearances for the Daggers over four years, scoring seven goals before joining Gillingham in summer 2022.
He spent a year with the Gills before joining Crawley Town , where he made more than 50 league and cup appearances. He then joined Swindon in summer 2024.
Wright spent two years at Swindon, making nearly 100 league and cup appearances, many as captain, before joining Barnet in summer 2025.
Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard said: "Will is someone I have admired for some time, he has real quality in possession of the football and is a perfect fit for our style and the way we play.
"He brings a wealth of experience having been in the EFL for the last five seasons and he is coming into his twilight years, and we know we can get the best out of him.
"He joins a very competitive squad and will bring much-needed competition in our defensive unit.
"I look forward to seeing him play and progress with us and no doubt he will fit in seamlessly into the group on and off the pitch."
Wright joined Barnet on a free transfer after being released by Swindon Town at the end of last season. | |
