I want us to have the ball in advanced places on the pitch. Another 'should win' game.......pick your best team Mr JS, f off with all this 'resting' stuff and play your top team and keep them on the pitch until the game is won (or lost). Could tonight be that night. Mind you I thought we would break that stat against Bolton and Preston. QPR 0 v 1 Derby it is then and will be so QPR..... Anyway looking forward to heading to W12 tonight and it might just be one of those nights under the lights at Loftus Road. See you all there - Come on you R'rrs.

Something certainly has to give tonight. We are likely to have more than half the possession, so can we break this terrible 18 month record? It’s an important game as due to Derby’s terrible injury problems and league position we will rarely get a better chance. Must admit I’m nervous.

Why is it a terrible 18 month record? You don't get extra points for winning with more possession. I'm really baffled with fans obsession with possession (poet, didn't know it). I actually like the fact we've got a great winning record with less possession. I wonder if we've got the longest winning record with less possession?

I think you, and Gaz, are perhaps confusing my point here - which is my fault for not making it more clearly. If we never win with more possession than the opposition again, I don't care. I far prefer watching, fast, exciting, counter attacking football to Russell Martin's death by 1,000 passes. But what has been our problem so far this year? Bolton at home, Preston at home, Charlton away... breaking down teams that just give us the ball and sit there. Winning when we're expected to win. West Ham on Friday actually suits us a lot better. And it's been a problem for a while - one win in eight home games, and yet unbeaten away so far this season. For us to have gone 70+ games without a win with more possession is highly, highly unusual. I'm not desperate to see us hold the ball for the sake of it, but we need to ice these Oxford type games (0-0 both times last year) where it's on us to have the ball and dictate the play. The possession stat is not a problem in an d of itself, but it's an indicator of an actual more serious issue.

Exactly. You have answered W7's point more eloquently than I could. Like you I don't care about possession for its own sake. It's the fact that we don't seem capable of winning these type of home games for the reason you explain. So its about points, not possession.

I totally get the Oxford comparisons from last season. We had more possession, but we were crap with it, and hardly created anything and never looked like scoring. So yes, we couldn't break down teams to actually look like socring/winning. I don't believe you can say the same for the games v Bolton and Preston. And the goal attempt stats back that up. Barring some excellent keeping, near misses and poor finishing, those games would've been won comfortably. With the Oxford games, we never really looked like scoring and were bereft of ideas, and the games were terrible. I see a huge difference/improvement this season with more possession, even if the results don't quite back it up, but the attacking stats most certainly do.

And Charlton? 72.4% possession, one chance for Paul Smyth.

Ok, 1 game out of 3 (33%) where we were below par, away to a Nathan Jones team in a London Derby. In previous years it would a far higher percentage of more possession games playing poorly. Do you not think that despite not quite getting over the line in these "more possession" games that we're playing significantly better then we usually do? And at least like we're doing absolutely everything but finding the net? I'd be more worried if the performances were still like Oxford, and they're clearly not. I think the difference in performance of the Oxford type games last year and similar "should win" games this season is like nght & day. [Post edited 14 Oct 17:16]

Both points can be true, surely? We are improving. But 18 months without a win when we have more than 50% possession means that when we are facing supposedly "weaker" sides at home we just aren't winning the games we should be winning. Hopefully tonight will be the turning point...
| For your next test – Preview on 01:31 - Oct 15 with 717 views | Northernr | That, tonight, is actually a good example of why it doesn't matter in isolation. Wholly dominant, much the better team, 4-0 up, the possession was around 60-40 on 80 mins. Mbengue goes off, we play with ten, referee adds 10 mins, Derby ponse about with it, ends up 48-52 and the stat continues. | | | |

It is becoming a crazy stat now Clive - Win 4 v 1 in 3rd gear and still they have more possession. I know it's under exceptional circumstances but still.......... I think my head is now with Wild thing - "possession can do one"

Is that where the stat ended ?????? I don’t believe it!!! Felt like we had soooooo much more of the ball than them.. Anyway 4-1 will do for me makes the detour off the M1 through Hertfordshire a much nicer drive

Exactly that. We had more possession all game until around the 90th minute where it swung into Derby's favour in injury time. And you could also look at the shots on goal - less than a lot of our games this season with just 9 (Derby had 15!) But this time the chances were converted. Basically the damage was done in the 1st half (55%) so the urgency in the 2nd half dropped off (41%). That plus playing with 10 men for the last 15mins where we were just sitting back and letting them have possession while we tried to keep a clean sheet. The most important stat though was the final score and a nice 3pts on the board. :-)
