This weeks LOTG questions…

Q1= A defender for Team A sees an arial ball coming in. There’s just a few team A players around him, but no Team B one’s close enough to challenge or go for where this arial ball is landing. So just before the Team A defender jumps up to header the ball he shouts “leave it” and his teammates do so as he heads the ball. What do you do now?

Q2= Team A are on the attack, their attacker is one on one with the keeper. The keeper is clearly out of his box, and when the Team A striker shoots, sticks out a hand to save and deflect away the shot.
But the shot from Team A was 100% going wide, yet the keeper still saved it with his hands outside his box. What do you give and why?

Q3= Team A keeper catches the ball with his two hands. Whilst telling his teammates to get up the pitch, he releases the ball out of his hands by rolling it onto the ground in front of him. But he then sees a team B attacker come towards him straight away, so as he sees no defenders anywhere near him, quickly picks up the ball again and beats the attacker to it by doing so. What should you give now.

Answers…

A1= For this situation it’s a play on, as it’s just a footballing myth that you can’t say “leave it” or terms similar to that during open play.
But this started because you can also still be cautioned and give away an indirect free kick for doing so, as it can come under a verbal distraction towards an opponent. As if this situation had opposition players around the defender who were put off by him shouting it/a player shouts it, or something else, to distract an opponent, then it’s also a cautioning and indirect free kick.

A2= It is only a cautionable offence with a direct free kick being awarded, as the keeper did pretty much attempt to cheat so is cautioned for unsporting behaviour (just like when players try to cheat through tactical fouls, pulling an opponent, simulation etc…) but it’s only a cautioning as his attempt didn’t stop a goal (as it was 100% going wide) so had no direct major impact on the score. which of course is what red cards are for, when it’s a handball offence.
This would also be the exact same if a player took a shot and a defending player attempted to handball it on the line, but because the shot was to powerful/far away, failed to do so, but still made clear contact with their hand and ball, which is also a cautioning for attempted DOGSO handball

A3= It is just an indirect free kick for a double handling infringement, as a keeper can NEVER be cautioned or sent off for a handball offence inside their own box.
