| News Comment | Southampton At Everton The Carabao Cup Verdict at 14:14:38
It was a long round trip from Somerset but a nice afternoon by the Mersey and The Albert Dicks before the game. Not a great match but good to win and I felt we deserved the win despite Everton missing two one on ones. Eleven super penalties with just the one that was missed. Our bench was much stronger than Everton's and it showed towards the end. Some good performances but little up front. I think the midfield isn't creating enough. Armstrong wasn't great but had very little service. Some very unhappy Everton supporters last night. |
| News Comment | Southampton V West Bromwich Albion The Play Off 2nd Leg Verdict at 12:24:58
A brilliant atmosphere and a performance to match. That’s three excellent performances in a row. Just one more needed. Everyone played their part in a great win. I felt we were in control and the better team throughout. Two super goals and a well taken penalty. Things were spoilt for me by the pitch invasion and especially the unnecessary taunting of the WBA fans. It denied us a lap of honour and as a regular away supporter I would have hated being abused the way the Albion fans were. There were other drink related incidents during the game. I guess being on a Friday night and people arriving early to greet the coach meant hours of drinking for some. That said it was a memorable night…the best since the win against Inter Milan. The final is too close to call but we’ve every right to go there in confidence. It’s been an enjoyable season with some great memories. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Leicester The Debacle at 02:27:12
Completely outplayed tonight. Very disappointing especially doing a 300 mile round trip with my son in law who's a Leicester supporter. Bought back memories of going to the 0-9 defeat together. Not to register a worthwhile shot and to leak five goals with 66% possession really is quite something. I did feel Che Adams despite not registering any efforts on goal played well holding the ball up well, drawing fouls and laying it off nicely at times. No one else really contributed much at all. Definitely second best. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Sunderland The Verdict at 11:37:19
A valuable three points but a stressful afternoon. I'd have started with Aribo and wouldn't have had Harwood-Bellis at fullback but in the middle. Not sure about the substitutes either. We were in control of the game and disrupted things. Subs should be used to change the game and it didn't need changing. To be fair subs did OK, especially Rothwell, but it certainly unsettled us for a while. As at Birmingham we never felt in control of the game. First half was OK but you always felt if Sunderland scored the whole game would shift. It certainly did and we lost all shape and composure for 15-20 minutes. Mistakes surfaced and I feared a defeat. The only good thing was Sunderland lost their composure too and got caught out. Two excellent finishes from Rothwell. An important win, especially with the long break ahead, but we didn't control the game well enough. Exciting to watch again though! |
| News Comment | Southampton V Manchester City The Carabao Cup Verdict at 12:33:42
Best quote from last night...'Football is a simple game. 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end the oil usually wins. But not always'. Oil being Saudi Arabian funded clubs in case you didn't get it. Can't believe last night's result. Such mixed emotions though as unable to be there after all the dross I've been down there for on a regular basis. Unable to go due to a very painful infected finger. Had bought my ticket and was definitely going till the pain set in after the morning's dog walk . What made it worse was having done the 5 hour round trip the week before for a match of just one shot on target! Love us to beat the other oil funded club in the semi final. A tough ask but possible. |
| News Comment | Dressing Room Unrest Never Ends Well at 09:16:54
The other rumour still persisting is Adams going to Everton. The club deny it will happen but then the papers 'quote' that Che wants to go to Everton. Someone is stirring things up unless Che did actually say that which I find hard to believe. I do hope Che isn't the source of comments re Ralph and is trying to force a way out. |

Really disappointing to read these rumours. Not helpful to anyone. Does need sorting somehow. Ralph needs results for sure but pushing to get rid of someone now is crazy. If needed review things at the World Cup break but don't make decisions after one tough away game. |
| News Comment | Ralph Hasenhuttl States That Che Adams Will Not Leave Saints This Summer at 16:05:21
I'm desperate for Che to stay. He offers so much more than just goals. His finishing isn't great though he did get a few last season. His hold up play , laying the ball off and through passes are great. Can't afford to let him go. Certainly worth £30 million in current climate. Very pleased to hear the club statements but the rumours keep persisting. We need another forward not to lose our current best one. |
| News Comment | Southampton v Liverpool The Verdict at 10:02:13
Fought hard but completely toothless and inevitably lost to wave after wave of attacks. Bad team selection and tactics by Hassenhutal again. I missed the Arsenal match so that's six consecutive long trips to home matches and six consecutive defeats for me. A near complete rebuild needed yet again this summer. Just hope a new manager is part of it. We were outclassed last night but Ward Prowse's performance and playing Diallo instead of Romeo (who I can only assume wasn't 100% fit) meant we were terrible in midfield and had no control there at all. Liverpool Reserves just had the freedom to build attack after attack. Substitutes were 10 mins too late for me. We needed to be proactive not reactive. A narrow defeat is OK but the manner of it was disappointing. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Watford The Verdict at 10:48:17
On the radio Ralph said his team selection and formation was designed to confuse Watford. It certainly confused us! |
| News Comment | Southampton V Watford The Verdict at 10:35:08
What a dreadful day. Two road closures added 50 miles to my long round trip from Somerset. Then on arrival I find we're just playing one striker against a side bottom but one. Why wasn"t Adam Armstrong in the side or given an apearance from the bench given his bright performance against Newcastle? I always thought this would be a tough game against a side battling against relegation and packing their defence. We do struggle against such teams and today showed little initiative to break them down. I don't know which half was worse. The first saw some ridiculous errors (the first goal a complete disaster and the second not much better). However, after pulling a goal back right on half time I think the second was probably even worse with our total failure to build on that goal Yes Watford did constantly break the game up (they'd learnt well from Newcastle) but we should have been able to deal with that. A thoroughly miserable day! |
| News Comment | Southampton V West Ham United The FA Cup Verdict at 11:48:59
Yes Ralph's plan might have worked but if West Ham had taken their chances they should have been 2-0 up before we scored. We were overwhelmed at the start. I understand Salisu and Bednarek may have had minor niggles but making so many changes was over the top. With a possible Wembley appearance and potential route in to Europe a more cautious approach would have been better. West Ham did look a tired side and trips to Liverpool and Seville could be damaging for them. It was a very enjoyable evening in the end with a great atmosphere again. |
| News Comment | Southampton V West Ham United The FA Cup Verdict at 11:11:30
After my usual 2.5 hour drive to a home match I could have watched on tele I was very angry at us fielding a reserve side. Made sense to rest 2 or 3 players given fixtures ahead (though with relegation a remote possibility I would have kept the same side and prioritised the cup) but resting 9 was crazy! I know we could use 5 subs and it worked in the end but was a huge gamble. We almost paid for it against Coventry and for much of the first half last night it looked like it was going to prove a disaster. With an international break after the quarter finals I trust he won't do it again. As for the game. We'll a great night again. We rode our luck earliy on but deserved the win with a stronger second half side. Two brilliant goals lit up the night. I didn't think it was a penalty and was surprised VAR gave it. Viewing the highlights I still wasn't sure but saw a photo this morning in the paper which suggests it was the right decision. All in all a great evening. Loved the tribute to Ukraine pre match. Only down side (team selection apart) was the idiots coming on to the pitch after the penalty. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Chelsea The Verdict at 13:46:17
Sorry to hear about your fall Hope you recover quickly. I thought we played well on Saturday and without the sending off (harsh given the conditions) we could have got a memorable draw. Mike Dean was wrong with both interventions for the disallowed Chelsea goal and the sending off. The referee had a good view of both and neither could be said to be clear and obvious errors. Dean can't resist taking centre stage and spoilt what was a very good committed game from both sides. |
