Spot on. We got within 85 runs of a record even though:- Brook plays a stupid shot once he was well set Crawley looks nailed on for a century and walks out of his crease to Lyon ( who bowled poorly until the brook wicket) & is stumped Smith hits 4 consecutive boundaries while in a great partnership on the last day but is out slogging a good ball with the next ball. There was plenty of time in hand but as you say, they just can't help themselves. It is like they always think they have a t-20 chase with a hundred runs needed from 10 overs. Frustrating |

as you point out, we seem unable to control the run rate. at least 2 bowlers are going for 5+ so as well as not taking the wickets, the run rate gets away from us too. They have also been better than us with catches. If Stokes can focus a bit more on his batting as he has done in his last 2 innings, he clearly has the eye and concentration to bat better than his lifetime average. bowl by all means, but other bowlers need to be found to pick up some of the strain he puts himself under with the ball. You mention some promising players coming up and I would say that after the ashes we need to blood a few of them. on't agree with Brook as captain. I don't think he has the mental capacity to do it. He talks some rubbish & seems to have not been as good as he has been given increased responsibility. he is one of those I would like to see focus on only his batting without other distractions. Anyway on to tomorrow ..... |

No the boldest prediction ever made !!! Absolute garbage today on a good batting pitch. What Pope was doing heaven knows, and Smith didn't get the memo about not thrashing out either. Archer played as well as most of our top order otherwise they would have been in today. Well on for being the fastest any team has lost the ashes |

https://www.bbc.com/sport/foot Unbelievable pricing policy for this World Cup. I am currently doing 53 nights in Australia, Tickets to every day of every test, all accommodation and flights for about 10% more than 1 middle tier ticket for the final. People will say it's market forces, but seems like a rip off to me. However I am sure it will be a sell out as will all the big games. shame for the loyal fans who watch their team regularly but will not be able to afford this WC |

you are correct. Only 4 days available & they would have sold day 5 only when it is clear there will be a day 5. I see that if we don't make it to day 5 in Adelaide, it will be the fastest that we have ever lost the ashes!!! down under. |

if we could have held the catches offered today, they would be all out and the scores would be about level. Smith, Carse and Duckett dropped easy chances. Root and Ducket had 2 more difficult chances, both dropped. Compare that with their catch for the last wicket today and the catch from their keeper yesterday. Also no Australian dismissed for less than 20 so far. Almost all of them left deliveries for a couple of overs before starting to open up, and they have still scored at 5.5 an over today. compare that with our 4 ducks and another single figure score. A team with 1 very good bowler and basic application of batting and fielding are running rings around us. tough ask tomorrow but as you say if we can take the last 4, and concede a lead of about 100 we have a chance if we can apply ourselves in the second innings. |

weird but brilliant days. We were 5-2, had 4 players getting a duck as well as a stupid run out. Yet amazing we are 322-9. At times we played sensibly against the lesser bowlers yet for some reason feel Starc is the one to throw the bat at. Will Jacks plays a sensible innings until Starc comes on then slashes at 2 balls, the second one getting him out. However at 5-2 then 264 for 9, we are now in a good position. Good point about the 6 overs tomorrow. Great opportunity to get those extra runs and perhaps even a half century for Archer. |

Pope is the classic example of what you mention about building an innings. Played quite nicely in the first innings. Today he gets in and is 33 of 57 balls without looking troubled. He then throws his bat at a good ball for no reason. There was still 3 days and almost 2 sessions left !!! He knew it too. We have just been thrashed by 8 wickets by a team where only 2 players passed 26 runs and they had the best bowler of the game. That's all it took to beat us. Don't get me started on Crawley !! |

No way that was a 19 wicket pitch today. Minimal movement but a few did seem to hold out. A lot of poor shots today. Surprised how bad the Aussies batted knowing there was still 4.5 days left. Brilliant bowling from England as a team whereas the Aussies only had Starc who bold superbly ( helped at the end by poor batting) i assume his first ball in the second innings is a hat trick ball ? |

I'm in Wardle and the wind/rain has been unbelievable today and judging by a few large crashing sounds a couple of roofs may be in trouble!!. If the game is on then clearly we have found a potential solution if money can be found in the future, because they won't get many tests like the last 24 hours. Fingers crossed |

That first match is key. To win the ashes we need to win 3 out of 5 games so losing that first game would make it a real uphill task to then win 3 out of 4 games. The Aussies have a good record there and have been playing regularly in the Sheffield shield. My fear is that if we do lose that first game, we will mentally collapse and get a series hammering ( again.) we have lost 13 of the last 15 tests there with 2 draws. All Fingers crossed |

Couldn't agree more. A meaningless white ball series against NZ just ahead of what should be our most important series once every 4 years doesn't make sense. 1 warm up against England A just before the 1st test and then meaningless game between tests 1 & 2 against a prime minister XI doesn't cut it. Aussies playing themselves into form in the Sheffield shield bodes well for them injuries or not. However I am optimistic it won't be 5-0 but let's see !! Need to be getting 400 or so in first innings to be competitive which means we can't just rely on Root + 1 or 2 others. Edit: also need our own bowlers to be injury free too, as well as in form [Post edited 24 Oct 17:15]

He is lucky in a way that we are playing second bottom, who only have 2 points. However as you point out, if we lose the fallout will add fuel to the fire from Saturday's debacle. Hopefully a 4-0 win!! |

Thrown away 3 points Thrown away momentum Thrown away top spot ( could be 5th idk Wealdstone win Turned 2 weeks of praise into a negative match thread thanks to one of the more gormless decisions I have seen any manager make in such a situation. Really need a good win on Monday & the negativity will die down. Jim has had a lot of praise in the last 2 weeks but needs the finger pointed directly at him for today's debacle. Of he admits he got it wrong in the interview he will save some face but I am not sure he will. |

answered perfectly. 40 yard forward pass to start the move. Rodney holds it up well & a pass across the box back-heeled in by ManiD. Great goal EDIT: 2-0. ManiD again although had a big deflection. Who cares !! [Post edited 9 Aug 16:17]

Bit of a pedestrian first half with only a few half chances for us. Same for them but they have had the best chance when they missed a sitter of a header from about 3 yards out. In general we are trying to go forward, but default to the back passing a little too often for my liking. They have a tricky left winger and their defenders are keeping our front 2 under control quite easily. Need to step it up second half |

4th on both questions. I don't see us going on the long winning runs required to be higher. |
