Your Queen comment is so far off the mark. I reckon Brian May wrote as many songs as Freddie did. John Deacon wrote some of the well known ones too (Another One Bites the Dust, You're My Best Friend etc). The sound of Brian May's guitar is so unique, mainly because he built it himself originally.
On the "solo" artist side, David Bowie is the one for me that probably wouldn't have had anywhere the success he had without Mick Ronson.
