Wow that was close. Our recent luck kept that out as much as anything, I think.

Bluesky Reccomendations
at 23:11 5 Dec 2024

I follow these two blokes for music reminiscing:

Graham Milburn: https://bsky.app/profile/gmilburn75.bsky.social
James Tansley: https://bsky.app/profile/tansleyjames.bsky.social

Graham runs polls, which is harder to do on Bluesky but fun all the same. We like a lot of the same stuff (Cure, Smiths, DMode, etc.).

James does a lot of themed posts over several days, grouped with a hashtag. He caught my attention last January on X, when he encouraged users to post an album-closing song every day that month. At the end, he tallied all the songs that appeared in posts with the hashtag, and made a playlist of the most popular ones. Here's the rundown of my choices: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/02QjGD6i9JuKwclDWk0DPg

I'll do that when my balance has some odd change attached. If I lose, the account has a nice even number; if I win, well, I'll have another weird wager to make the next time around.

Brian, the university that employs me boasts about Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess quite often, as they are alums. We usually lead with their role with the Sopranos, but Northern Exposure always gets mentioned, too — as it should.

Rob Morrow hosted Saturday Night Live the first time Nirvana appeared on the show. Great episode.

A Bluesky connection brought this band to my attention this week: Glazyhaze. They put out a new song this week, "What a Feeling." Good stuff.

That was thoroughly depressing and horrifying, and makes me fearful of what lies ahead.

Just the sort of stress relief I was seeking on Election Day over here.

I love the new Cure album in full. Fits nicely next to Disintegration and other top albums. The penultimate song All I Ever Am had not been previewed live … what a gorgeous surprise.

My son was diagnosed two years ago. He desperately wanted help via diagnosis and medication so that his life would NOT be defined by it. The transformation once he got his meds dialed in (which didn’t take too long) was incredible. Ended up graduating with honors and started university this week.

I will admit I was hesitant to have him seen for it. I hated myself for the delay once I saw the result.

Our example is anecdotal … and it is true.

I listen to Cigarettes After Sex more than just about anyone these days.

"Tejano Blue," my favorite from the new album:

“…he’s not what they want, but what the people want.”

He’s yet to win a general election popular vote.

I’ve had no appetite for conspiracy theories in the past and I’m not going to start now.

Best and worst gigs you've attended

Best would be The Cure. Perhaps to the horror of other Cure fans, it happened in 2016 (rather than The Prayer Tour or the early post-punk days). First night in Chicago, that being June 10. Played a lot of my favorite deeper cuts, did four encores, 30-some songs total. I was right up front by Simon, who inspired me to pick up a bass long ago.

Setlist: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-cure/2016/uic-pavilion-chicago-il-3fe1d23.htm

Worst: Well, I’ve seen worse than what I’m about to say, but considering expectations, it has to be The War on Drugs. Adam was in shambles; he spent most of the show channeling Ric Flair, endlessly shouting “Woooooo!” (prompting the audience to mockingly shout it back at him.Toward the end of the set, he challenged the venue’s sound guy to fisticuffs; I think the crowd wanted Sound Guy to accept. It’s kinda funny, I suppose, but I’d have preferred a focused show.

Stunning news yesterday. Just 61.

At the helm for plenty of important alt records (Nirvana - In Utero; Pixies - Surfer Rosa; PJ Harvey - Rid of Me) and countless others. Really enjoyed recent work with Ben Frost.
