Lower back pain 11:09 - Sep 9 with 6567 views | TheChef | Any tips to help with this? I was fine this morning till I bent down to get a bowl for my cereal at which point something in my lower back went twang! Sitting down at my desk is OK but as soon as I try to stand up the pain comes through again - feel like a 90 year old! I popped a couple of ibuprofen but otherwise that's it. Any help appreciated!

Lower back pain on 11:16 - Sep 9 with 4215 views | Sudbury_Hill_R | Go to see your Doc who will assess and probably arrange physio. Should also give you something stronger to ease the pain. Probably Co-Dydramol, Co-Codamol or an antiimflamatory Naproxen or similar dependant on your health. Try to relax and find your comfort zone. It will all take time.
Lower back pain on 11:26 - Sep 9 with 4184 views | RickyDicky | Had a similar problem about two months ago, felt something go pop. Pain came on two days later. Went to see a specialist and seems I have a ruptured disc , waiting for an MRI, then possibly surgery to fuse two joints together. Pains in my legs and a numbness down the left side, difficult to walk, pretty immobile at the moment, which is added inconvenience as I can't throw a sicky as I run my own business !! Seems that when you're young the discs are like sponges and go back in after a while. Over 40 and the discs get harder and take a long time to go back or never. I'm over 50 so I'm well fecked ! Avoid lifting and try to rest. I can totally sympathise. Hope it gets better.

Lower back pain on 11:43 - Sep 9 with 4120 views | FDC | I get sciatic nerve pain fairly regularly, usually if I've been stood up without much movement for a while (if I go to a non-league, terraced football game it's almost guaranteed). It feels a bit like how you described (like something catching in my lower back), but also with pains down my thighs and sometimes into my lower legs. If that sounds similar, maybe give warm-up style stretching a go: if I do stretches first thing in the morning it helps a lot - it seems to be related to having very tight ham-strings. Lower back pain on 12:09 - Sep 9 with 4069 views | Hayesender | I have a prolapsed disc which I just have to manage as best as possible. Being a postie doesn't help the situation, nor the seats at Loftus Rd. There's a constant pain in my back and legs, but whenever it decides to really pop (three times now) the pain is like nothing I've ever felt before. Good luck

Lower back pain on 12:20 - Sep 9 with 4044 views | WokingR | Be very careful about going to your doctors for something that may be gone in a day or two on it's own. I did the same a few years back and when I subsequently joined Bupa private healthcare they excluded back problems because of this previous issue on my health record. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Lower back pain on 12:39 - Sep 9 with 4008 views | YorkRanger | Lie on your front arms stretched out above your head and then (slowly) lift one arm and the opposite leg about six inches off the floor, then do the same with the other arm/leg and repeat half a dozen times. Do this in the morning and whenever practical.

It's a tw@t isn't it, I've had it for about six years now on and off. Finding some stretches that help has definitely improved things - I try to get to the gym most mornings and spend a good 20-30 mins going through them. When I don't get round to it I definitely notice the difference

what is this thing "gym" you speak of? Yes, I was fortunate that when I was in Cork last month, the wife's nephew is married to a Chiropractor and she put me through 2 rounds of WWF wrestling, which scared the life out of me having never been to a Chiropractor before!! Never came out of a health professionals consultation sweating, more so from worry about what she was going to do next. Really helped though But, I agree, it really is all about the stretches.

Yeah, been the same for me.. at my old age. I do know the stretches to do when it comes around and that seems to help. A lot of glute stretches are well worth it. Also, I had that same problem about standing for a period and at some stages could not stand in one place for more than just ten minutes before I had pain and tingling. Physio helped it and also having a session on the rack. I also have a session with an osteo every two months as, one may say, a checkup and clean. Backs are bad, especially when you get old. Good luck with it all.

Just googled glute stretches and I think that's what I meant. This is the one that seems to do the trick for me:

Yep, my main area of concern is the glutinous "minimalis" as my physio used to call them. Once that takes a hold, pain spreads everwhere in the region, lower back, arse, right bollock, hamstrings, kneecap, calves. The whole shooting match.

It won't help in the slightest but when your wife is fed up with your moaning it will at least bring a smile to her face seeing you do this
Lower back pain on 13:39 - Sep 9 with 3837 views | FredManRave | About 8 years ago now I suffered with the sciatic nerve. So painful, at it's worst I was having daily pain killing injections and when sleeping on the couch cos I couldn't get to bed I'd have to piss in a bottle as even crawling to the toilet was not an option. I went to doctors, experts, did the physio, had the massages, heat treatment etc and whilst it got better it was still always an issue. Then somebody recomemded acupuncture. I'd certainly never thought of it and wasn't particularly confident that alternative medicine would be able to help. 20 sessions later at a highly recomemded acupuncturist and I was literally cured and now 8 years later I've had just the one relapse and that was afyer a fall whilst playing squash and that was only momentarily Obviously there's no guarantee but to all back sufferers out there would at least recomend a consultation with a recomemded and reputable acupuncturist. Good Luck.

Lower back pain on 13:46 - Sep 9 with 3807 views | themodfather | i have used the british school of osteopathy, they have a few sites around london...they will for a small fee/donation, give you an examination and some treatment.....you may be seen by a trainee under supervision, and no one will do anything until its approved.....i found them very useful.
Lower back pain on 13:52 - Sep 9 with 3798 views | londonscottish | I had lower back pain once which went on for months and months and was finallu sorted by a physio. I think I orginally damaged a ligament swimming without having warmed up. Got into the pull, set off at full speed and half a length in reared up to avoid someone coming the other way. This (relatively minor) injury gradually got worse and worse until I was becoming increasingly incapacitated. Eventually went to the doctor who referred me to a physio, My entire lower back had gone rigid. She treated it with some heat and gentle stretches and gave me a programme of stretches to do at home. Job jobbed. Still use the stretches when I feel my back stiffening up from time to time (usually due to sitting badly at a desk for long periods of time/lifting heavy objects badly).

Lower back pain on 14:29 - Sep 9 with 3756 views | TheChef | Cheers all for the advice. I popped to Boots at lunch and got myself a heat pack and some more ibuprofen. Worst bit still is moving from a sitting to a standing position. Will give it a day or two and see if it clears up otherwise will head for the GP/Physio.

Lower back pain on 14:40 - Sep 9 with 3740 views | Aunt_Nelly | Drugs. Lot's of drugs. Avoid sitting in a cramped/confined space. So no more home games. Get one of those electric scooters fat people use because they're too lazy to walk plus a stairlift for indoors. If that fails then amputation is the only viable option. Good luck. Yup - another expert sufferer throwing in my two penn'orth. Keep those ibuprofen at maximum dose for 4 days even if you feel a bit better. The anti-inflammatory action allows it to heal properly. Swim. Don't sit for long. Worst thing for the lumbar region.
Lower back pain on 15:01 - Sep 9 with 3700 views | hovehoop | Ok. Was bedridden in May. Returned from a 4 day bike ride and the glute muscle went into spasm. I've never had pain like it and couldn't get any relief or comfort. My wife panicked and phoned for help. A paramedic arrived. Said the glute had gone into spasm. He gave me a range of drugs including diazepan and hung round an hour until I could move. This was 16 weeks ago. Since then I've had 16 weeks of sciatica down my right leg, numbness in the leg and foot and muscle failure causing me to fall over. The pain through the glute in this time has lessened though it's constant. Had an MRI scan revealing a prolapsed disc. The image shows the protruded disc distorting the nerve strand and compressing the nerve, which forks at this point and goes down each leg. Another disc is not prolapsed though doesn't look healthy. Was offered choices of do nothing, a spinal injection or surgery to cut off the prolapse. I'm self employed so the surgery option was a non starter as I can't afford the time off for recovery. The injection doesn't cure the problem though it buys time by settling (supposedly) the pain so the disc can go through a natural healing process. Currently, I'm undecided if to leave it or have the injection. I've been doing physio. Though stupidly set myself back weeks by doing the glute stretches mentioned in this thread. Based on my experience it's best only doing an exercise regime that reflects your condition and your range of movements in agreement with a good physio. Hopefully you have a pull or something similar that will heal shortly. On reflection, I'd been ignoring lower back pain a while. Especially that from standing watching my son play football. This type a pain is, in my view, symptomatic of inadequate core strength and disc degeneration. This is to be expected as modern lifestyles support so much sitting and less and less movements. I'm reasonably sporty though the amount of sitting at work cancels out many of the gains. And the convenience devices like remote controls etc. are all encouraging less and less movements. The discs, so I've read, have a slow metabolism. So they deteriorate slowly and by extension heal slowly. The physio says this problem will likely be with me 6 months. The GP feels 18 months is more likely. My advice to anyone with lower back pain is do something about it now. Try yoga or pilates once a week. Back pain is age related and though I once felt yoga/pilates were 'not my thing' I realise they are enablers that will allow me to resume the sports/activities I love. Be careful though. Don't do anything too soon. The recovery, in my case at least is sometimes 1 step forwards and 2 steps back and mentally that can be hard to deal with. You may need to try a movement only to find it causes too much pain in which case you stop and do something else. Though do persist. I've tried the meds mentioned here too. Though they have side affects like stomach upsets and often mask your progress. Two pals had the disc surgery. One was ok for a year then had to go back for an injection. The other had the surgery though it did something to his bladder such that he didn't stop visiting the loo! As soon as I'm fit enough I'll be straight to the yoga centre. Good luck with it.
