If all zones are covered and every player is paying attention then any delivery into the box will be able to be attacked by one or more players. It's a basic principle of classic English defending (two narrow banks of four, moving as if joined by a short rope, up, down, side to side in lines). Players spend most of the game "marking a line!!!!!"
It turns out Potter's zonal system is crap and easily exploited by set piece specialists, but that doesn't make all zonal systems crap.
Watch the last world cup if you want to see man to man systems used by players without the skill or training to use them effectively (spoiler: it's just loads of grappling with no one watching the ball, players still score, and give away loads more pens) |
Very true, but you don't find out your system is crap until you try it.
I'm sure GP will be either working on the zonal system to get it better, or changing it, as that defending was appalling tonight. |  |

Of course I'm not happy that we're a goal down, but up to then it's been a good match to watch. The BBC and others say that we've been playing the better football so there must be SOME of our team who are playing well, why not mention them as well? |
Frustrating indeed. Yeah we were definitely the better side. They came into it the second half though.
2 awful, identical goals.
Some good, some bad performances.
I thought CCV was solid, don't think he made a mistake.
Dan was working hard, but still hasn't got the end product. It will come.
Olsson had a very good game and put some dangerous balls in the box.
Grimes did a more than decent job in the middle.
Connor did bog all out there and didn't run a lot. No service and not used to the back 3.
Both Rodon and VDH were poor I think and made a few mistakes along with slow build up.

I thought Grimes was good too. For me though, crossing the ball into the goal area just plays into the hands of a well drilled defence of a modern football side. Defences these days are really organised. And with us being a ball-on-the-floor passing side, it doesn’t seem to suit us at all. We were average, not much between the sides to be honest, the contrast of defending was the difference.
Their goals were shocking from our point of view.
Grimes and Carter-Vickers were decent imo, majority of the rest were indifferent. Although I thought Celina, McBurnie and VDH were poor considering the standards they have set throughout most of the season. |  | | |

How many times did VdH have to carry the ball forward because none of the midfield were showing for him? I think WBA were more than happy for him to do that. Back in the day, Leon would be making himself available in those areas - we still don't have people willing to do that.
Other than that, Dan James needs to work on his finishing, Celina needs to start doing stuff (apart from the gorgeous ball for James, which he should have buried), and we need to start attacking the high ball from corners and free kicks. Roberts seems to have gone backwards lately also. | | | |
