Blackpool heading to The J.Davidson!

Altrincham have landed a prestige pre-season friendly with one-time FA Cup winners Blackpool, as manager Phil Parkinson continues to draw up plans for the forthcoming campaign.

As well as signing up players for next season, the Alty boss is hand-picking fixtures to build up match sharpness, with Blackpool visiting The J.Davidson Stadium on Saturday, July 20th (3pm) and the Robins making the short trip to Trafford on Tuesday, July 30th (7.45pm).

While Alty's reputation as fearsome Cup fighters was forged in the early rounds, Blackpool made it to the final no fewer than three times between 1948 and 1953.

They lost to Manchester United in 1948 and Newcastle three years later but finally lifted the trophy in unforgettable style in what became known as the Matthews final, as Stanley Matthews inspired a fightback from 3-1 down to win 4-3.

The Seasiders were in the Premier League, under the larger-than-life leadership of Ian Holloway, less than a decade ago, and while they have hit hard times since, there is an air of confidence on the Fylde coast that they are on their way back.

They could be under new ownership by the time they arrive at The J.Davidson Stadium, with four bids under consideration, following the end of the controversial Oyston era at Bloomfield Road.

On the field, manager Terry McPhillips is eager to build on last season's 10th place finish in League One, and with vastly-experienced former Liverpool and Bolton midfielder Jay Spearing driving them on as captain, Blackpool should prove attractive opposition for Alty fans and a stern test for Parkinson's team.

Ten days later, the Robins travel to face a Trafford side managed by Tom Baker, who is making headway in his own plans to finalise his squad for the new season. Among several players to make a verbal commitment to remain at Shawe View is midfielder Laurence Taylor, who made such a favourable impression in Alty colours after progressing through the youth and reserve ranks.

Sensible, just hope it's not a wet summer.

Blackpool have finalised their pre-season plans by adding a midweek trip to Southport to their list of summer friendlies.

The Seasiders will travel to Haig Avenue on Tuesday, July 23, kick-off 7.30pm.

It will be their penultimate friendly of the summer.

Blackpool last faced Southport in a friendly back in 2017, when Kyle Vassell, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Armand Gnanduillet all scored in a 3-1 win.

The Seasiders will begin their pre-season preparations with a trip to Spennymoor Town, although the fixture will take place at Shildon AFC's Dean Street ground owing to improvement works taking place at Spennymoor's stadium.

Terry McPhillips' men will follow that up with a short midweek trip to Mill Farm to take on National League neighbours AFC Fylde.

The following weekend Pool will split their squad to face two friendlies on the same day, away at Barrow and Altrincham.

The Seasiders will then finish their pre-season campaign with a home game against Blackburn Rovers after their midweek trip to Southport.

The club are likely to play a couple of behind-closed-doors friendlies, with one expected to be against Dundee during their training camp in St Andrew's.

Pre-season schedule:

Saturday, July 13 - Spennymoor (A)

Tuesday, July 16 - AFC Fylde (A)

Saturday, July 20 - Barrow & Altrincham (A)

Tuesday, July 23 - Southport (A)

Saturday, July 27 - Blackburn (H)

A good schedule to get the players gelling and warmed up or should it be more competitive (only Blackburn as a real test)?

Blackpool will return to Scotland for a pre-season training camp in July, manager Terry McPhillips has confirmed.

The Seasiders have based themselves in St Andrews, Fife for several seasons now, which has allowed for some vital preparation and fitness work to take place.

“We’ve gone to Scotland in previous years and that’s worked. We’ll have 10 days here first and then travel up to St Andrews,” the manager said.

“We’ll get some good fitness work into the lads and then play a behind closed doors game while we’re up there.”

Blackpool’s first public pre-season friendly will come on the journey back from Scotland, with a match against Spennymoor Town taking place at Shildon AFC on Saturday 13 July.

Good point, it's going to be an interesting pre-season.

I'm sure players report back before the end of June.
