I played amateur football for TBA in the old Manchester Industrial League and lots of the pitches were in better condition than that at this time of the year. It looks very, very sandy. Several Hornets players had a sort of gravel rash on their knees after going to ground following the Oldham game. Sliding tackles would be hazardous for footballers.

Is anyone ever going to get to grips with the obviously inadequate drainage at COA?
These problems have been going on for years and £100s of thousands have been spent on the top 12 inches or so but there is little evidence that they have attempted to put an effective drainage system in place before spending all that money.
Do the companies that do the pitch renovations have any idea how wet it is in Rochdale? |  | | |

Oh, then rebuild the sandy.

If they did dig trenches from the Pearl St end down both sides, couldnt they also dig another across the front of the Sandy as a continuation of the Main stand side trench and pour both sides into the existing outlet into the main drain which I think is in the corner of Wilbutts and Sandy lane? It might need some changes in the connection to the main drain but its a simpler solution and probably much easier to maintain | | | |

It would be good to get a definitive position from the club on this issue. They have consulted often enough with experts. Question for the forum? Is it simply too expensive to do the job properly, so we have to go for the "putting lipstick on a pig" option every summer?
Its bad enough watching some of our footy on a reasonable pitch, but if we get another "porridge" pitch like the one we played Lincoln on before the Spurs Cup game, BBM is going to have to look at his tactics. |  |

I'm sure that John Smallwood gave quite a detailed talk on the pitch and drainage issues at a recent fans forum.
Basically, one half of the pitch is well drained, but the drains on the Main Stand side don't reach the touchline, and thus, it's always this side where we get the most problems. I think the width of the pitch was reduced in an effort to sort this out, but it's clearly just rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.
He said it would cost £1m or so to fix. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the club has been "frugal" with the record monies we've been getting over the last year or so.
Hopefully, it will be covered in the forthcoming presentation by the club. If it isn't , then serious questions need to be asked. | | | |

I understand the powers that be are aware of this aspect of the problem and it's under consideration. As is having a slight crown or camber to aid with drainage. | | | |

Accrington completely did their pitch and drains in the summer. Their chairman said it cost “£300k any less was a waste of time. We tried all sorts of ‘quick fixes’ one at a cost of £75k
