It's what happened with all of the other big pandemics in history: Black Death, Smallpox, the Great Plague, Russian Flu, Spanish Flu etc. One day they just went away.
At the time, people must have thought it was a miracle when they disappeared.
Apparently, changes in weather patterns are very influential in bringing pandemics to an end.
