What is more frightening, is that the acquisition of wealth in the USA seems to facilitate disregard for the boundaries that support legality, fairness and common decency in favour of selfish indulgence. The Republican Party representatives mostly seem to endorse the attitude that in America, you should have the freedom to do what you like if you have the money to buy it, and protect you from the consequences. Trump is simply the most recent, least attractive representative of this (apart from the fart bag Giulliani). Of course, the UK is not without its high profile representatives in this arena, Robert Maxwell, Phillip Green, Mohamed Al-Fayed. I have a lifelong friend who, in the time I have known him has migrated from ardent socialist, to Liberal, to ardent Trump supporter as his business and wealth has grown. Now, their is nothing wrong with changing your opinions as you gain more experience of life, and we are all prone to do so in relation to the specifics of our own lives. But when it is driven by greed for money or power, or self indulgence, it can come across as somewhat ugly. No, I am not bitter. Haha |
