| Failing our kids again.......... on 19:57 - Jan 13 by solent_toffee | The child benefit is there to pay for the welfare of the child, to feed, to clothe, to heat, to wash. That would include the water bill, the gas, the electric bill etc. All of which go up each year much higher than wages and benefits. Sometimes there just isn’t enough money to go around even for those who don’t have a feckless lifestyle. |
But even so, I can tell you now, I would go fishing in the local lake to feed my kids. They are my kids and my responsibility with the wife. They are the first priority and I would never accept others feeding them. There may be a few genuine cases, but most cases are people who increasingly expect the state to look after them. This message then translates to what happens.

There is definitely a cycle of deprivation in this country that has been going on for the past couple of generations, neither side of the political parties have ever been honest or brave enough to discuss it. Both are too scared of the damage it might do to their votes so they carry on enabling it. The welfare state has to be completely reformed. There are families that haven’t seen employment for generations and see benefits as an entitlement rather than the safety net and point of need that it was established to be. However, I would say they are minority rather than the majority.

"and see benefits as an entitlement rather than the safety net" This is the key bit. Kids are increasingly being dragged up, because parents can't be bothered to "fish in the local lake". They would rather ask the state to look after their kids. The state offering all this "support" won't necessarily make them happier in my opinion. These kids will grow up thinking they don't have to work for anything as they will be looked after. As I said, surviving on beans on toast taught me a positive lesson, not a negative one. It convinced me that I would work dam hard to ensure might kids got a better deal. But I also respected my parents for working their way out of the difficulties and they did. So when we talk about compassion, shall we talk about teaching future generations about hard work, resilience and working for a better life, rather than everything handed to them? The assumption that everyone is on the take, that people can’t afford to feed their kids because they spend their cash on anything but their kids. It’s just appalling. More and more people are getting sucked into this downward spiral through no fault of their own.Saint Toffee is right, we need to show more understanding and compassion for those who are struggling. The economy will take years to recover from the pandemic meaning more and more people will find themselves in this situation. Perhaps if some of those making these huge generalisations found themselves having to feed their own kids with a couple of carrots and a tin of beans they might have a bit more sympathy.

They are only being given the food the child would have recieved had they been at school, seeing as parents are not allowed to send beans on toast into school as a pack lunch as it would be deemed unhealthy, i think you should keep your gob shut tbf, not to mention if your kid told school that they eat just beans on toast you would find social services at your door.

I certainly won't be keeping my gob shut, no - sorry to disappoint you. Firstly I said I was given beans on toast when I was a kid (during a brief period of hardship), so read properly next time. It taught me the value of money and the need to work hard for a better life. I'm not talking about those who would normally be given free meals in schools, I'm talking about the holidays and feeding the nation's kids in general. Secondly, beans on toast is perfectly healthy (probably more healthy than the food that the record number of obese children receive today in this country) and as it happens my kids do have it for lunch sometimes and they are perfectly healthy. Good try with the threat about my kids who are thriving and doing very well at school and in life. I await the social services beans on toast brigade. Thanks Saint 22 or are you related? 😂 [Post edited 14 Jan 2021 7:57]

You complain about Tories making huge generalisations. Actually Soggy it’s you making generalisations no-one else mentioned any political party. Remember that so called poverty survived through the Blair years. An issue here is the sense of entitlement that is seen amongst some benefit claimants. As Solent suggested some families are in the benefit system for successive generations. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Beans on toast is not healthy, Beans are healthy, Sugar and salt rich tomato sauce isnt. i am sure what ever part of the UK you come from, serving your child 4 hour old beans and toast for school lunch is perfectly fine, here, i class it as child abuse, that bread would be gone stale and god knows what bacteria has started to grow on that food. only takes 1 hour for beans to start growing mould out side a fridge once cooked, think about that. no to mention dry buttered bread... think its time you got to grips with todays world and stop thinking kids are in work houses still, if i gave my kids beans on toast for any thing other than breakfast i would feel ashamed, defo not for school. leave toast for 4 hours, your gross, could give your child food poisoning on 4 hour old cooked butter toast and beans. sicko. If you had not noticed, schools are active, kids should be at school, so wind your neck in, im sure all those people who are on furlough have costs the tax payer more in one year than the hole UK unemployed will in 10 years. What are you saying Jay? That we shouldn’t try and make things better because a small percentage may be not using it wisely? That those in need can’t have any luxury? I’m confused, especially coming from someone who’s stated several times that “all lives matter.”

What is luxury? All you really need to have a good time in life is food, drink, sleep, family, friends, exercise and shagging. People are now conditioned to think luxury means expensive top of the range electronic brands, Nike trainers, alcohol, foreign holidays and all the rest. [Post edited 14 Jan 2021 14:29]

Well, you just have wasted a whole post, getting highly flustered ðŸ˜. We don't send the perfectly healthy beans on toast into school. You really are making huge assumptions and finding it hard to read. And again, no I won't wind my kneck in. Within the rules, I will say what I like, sorry 😢 Buttered bread? If luxury was afforded to all, how would we ever teach the need to achieve, to reach for the stars, to work hard, to become successful? The welfare state should be a safety net for the genuinely starving and in desperate need, not an entitlement for most. If people wanted luxury for all, they would have elected Corbyn's socialist party. [Post edited 14 Jan 2021 16:38]

I’ve got no idea of the circumstances of the person involved in the tweet Jay posted. Who knows how they afforded the luxury of a 7 year old games console. Maybe they did work hard and save to provide something to entertain them and their family? I certainly wouldn’t assume all parents using the scheme are the same based on my assumptions from seeing a few with luxuries - whatever your view on what makes a luxury, it’s clear that a game console is being viewed as one by Jay and the original tweeter.

You are saying that people wanted Brexit (the total opposite of socialism) and that's why they voted Conservative? Doesn't that say it all? Socialism is about equality? Have you asked those in Venezuela what they think? [Post edited 15 Jan 2021 3:50]

I don't really know about individual cases, I am more interested the broader discussion. I'm sure you said you were a teacher? Do you come across a lot of parents and children who just "expect"? They expect the school to pay for trips, teachers to be on the phone at 11pm etc. If so, why? Why don't kids understand the value of money or respect property etc. Why don't some parents respect teachers? From what I have read, many teachers are fed up of parents blaming schools for their own failures? Do you not think that many parents are just not being responsible rather than simply being poor? How many parents don't bother reading with their kids with books sent home.from school? Are they too.poor to read with them? [Post edited 14 Jan 2021 18:42]

Although I think this takes the discussion on a slight tangent, you’d be horrified to know the percentage of parents that don’t read to their children and leave them in front of tv/tablets. You’d be horrified to know the percentage of children I give breakfast and lunch to out of my own pocket. That they’ve got shitty/poor/irresponsible parents doesn’t mean I don’t read to them or let them go hungry though.

You have just helped me to make my point. We can put plasters on, by providing free meals, but the large percentage of dreadful parents is the thing that needs to be tackled right? These are the parents that were in our schools what 10 years ago? Something isn't working is it. And you say they sit in front of their tv's and tablets yet don't feed them. Point made precisely. I’m honestly unsure what your real point is? We should let the children starve as a punishment for poor parenting? Not withstanding that a high number not reading or feeding properly doesn’t means that it’s the majority. It’s also not necessarily the same children that aren’t fed as the ones that are not read to. That’s your prejudice showing. Just to be clear again, you’re advocating letting children go without meals because you believe some parents to be substandard? [Post edited 14 Jan 2021 19:15]
