McCarthy is costing us points 08:38 - Aug 24 with 5957 viewsdirk_doone

McCarthy showed some improvement on Sunday. He came out and punched a couple of crosses instead of always retreating into his goal and instead of letting in his usual 3 goals, he only let in 1. But, his long kicks all either went straight out of play or to Man United players and he seemed to do everything in his power to avoid the Greenwood shot that United scored from. That was caused by the panic that sets in with him when opposition players are attacking his goal. It would have been easier for him to let the ball hit him. That cost us 2 points to add to the 1 he lost us at Everton, where Forster would have saved 2 of those goals

McCarthy hasn't kept a single clean sheet this year. All of our clean sheets have come when Forster has been in goal. Over a season, the points McCarthy is costing us are going to make a massive difference to our league position.

How long have you been watching Saints???We had our highest finishes this century - 7th and 6th - when Fraser Forster was in goal. He's kept numerous clean sheets and got us to a Wembley final with clean sheets against Arsenal and Liverpool twice. Even this season, when he's played, he's been good. We'd never have achieved any of that with McCarthy in goal. He is a liability and shouldn't be playing at this level.

Of course there are better goalkeepers than Forster out there but could we get them with our limited transfer budget and lowly league position? Personally, I'd like to see us buy Hrádecky but with Bayer Leverkusen doing so well, would he come here? The important thing is to get rid of McCarthy so he can't play for us any more. We could take any random goalkeeper from the Championship and he'd be an improvement on McCarthy but getting one better than Forster to come here will be more difficult because we won't pay more than £10 mill for him and he'd probably already be at a club of our status.

Yeah and if you remember we had one of the best defences in the league at that point with Fonte, Van Dijk, an inform Bertrand and Cedric as well as a great attack which took a lot of pressure off of the defence, hence why Forster had very little to do for a majority of games that he played in. But if you remember what happened after that back 4 fell apart, he did have to start saving shots and that’s where he crumbled and we all saw/realised that he just wasn’t any good and was dropped hence why we loaned him to the likes of Celtic and such. As we sure do need a new goalie and the West Brom/England one is getting brought up a lot around us and would be a perfect fit, but the earliest he’s gonna come is January and until then I’d rather keep with the better keeper who is McCarthy (and he may be better but he’s just not consistently good enough to be PL quality) as well as the fact that Forster wants these ridiculous wages which he certainly doesn’t deserve hence why he wants to go but no ones come looking for him as he’s also not PL quality but asks for PL wages whilst McCathy is just a bit better, but doesn’t do for ridiculous wages.
But like I said before the best scenario is where we get a new keeper in January as I don’t care who everyone thinks is better out of Forster or McCarthy, because nether is PL quality

He is a Saints fan so he would jump at the chance to join us.

Bring in Setford and Johnstone and I would be happy - one for now and one for the future. I would also like to then see Forster in a mentoring role as a senior, experienced international who has faced many demons.

Yeah Forster was in goal when we finished there, but if you also watched saints back then, he had Fonte, Van Dijk and an inform Cedric and Bertrand in front if him, as well as a great midfield and attack, hence why he had barely anything to do. Which is the exact reason why once that defence fell apart, and he actually had to start consistently making saves, he did rubbish and got dropped and then sent out on loan to Celtic. And sorry but he’s played two games, and only had to do much in one game (Chelsea) which was a fixture that McCarthy also did well in only a few weeks earlier. Sheesh I mean most of the top goalies out there are quite overrated as they just get these amazing defenders in front of them, which means that they don’t have to often produce many decent saves, yet still get rated really highly because of the clean sheets there defenders produce.

And no it’s Forster we need to get rid of rather than McCarthy, as he’s the one asking for ridiculously high wages (hence why he’s not been sold, as no one gonna pay his wages for the lack of quality he produces) whilst McCarthy ain’t much better but actually asks for a reasonable wage. And yeah there are keepers out there that we could get, like the West Brom/England one who wants to leave and supposedly us and west Han are interested in buying, or even getting the likes of Henderson from Man U on loan.
