New position and different player 12:37 - Aug 31 with 682 viewssaint901

Last season I was a critic of Djenepo.

As a forward/advanced midfield player he looked to be out of his depth and was being picked off by opposition defenders pretty much at will.

He seems to have been reinvented as a full back. (Not the first winger that Saints has converted to that position - Bridge, Bale, etc).

He clearly still has a lot to learn and the MU goal was perhaps due in part to his getting caught out, but he clearly likes the position. Perhaps because he has a little more time and is usually facing the way he wants to go, rather than having a hefty full back pushing him and having to turn?

I've said elsewhere that A Armstrong is a different player in his new position and that this may be the new coaching staff's idea or perhaps RH - we'll never know. I suspect though that Djenepo is a coaching staff decision.

So fair play. At the end of last season I'd have sold him into the lower leagues. This season so far, he has excelled and was rightly treated to a standing ovation when subbed against MU. That'll teach me to make rash judgements (but I suspect not).

I love moussa. He always tries and last season I think he maybe tried a little too much.

This season he has been quality he deserves the praise and applause and he always seems happy and smiling .

Like you, I have been a big critic of Djenepo.

I still think he is extremely limited as an attacking player (and Adam Armstrong has shown him how it should be done) but he has performed OK as a defender.

And tbh he has always performed best in a defensive role even when he was playing in midfield. Always getting in players' faces, all arms and legs, really disrupting their play.

But the dangerous thing about him is that he is so likeable as a player. Always got a smile on his face, always works hard, is quick across the ground, and never stops running for 90 minutes.

I still don't think he's quite got it technically for this level - you are right that he was completely out of position for the MU goal - but credit where credit it due for his sheer commitment to the team.

And his tackle on Ronaldo in the box was one of my best moments at St Mary's for a long time!

He is always enthusiastic, and generous in his support of the team. I am glad to see that he is cutting the mustard at last. He is pretty swift when running free, but seems to get treacle feet when he has the ball, so if he can maintain concentration, maybe FB is his position?
