Comparing athletes and team espirit de corps 15:22 - Jun 28 with 543 viewssaint901

I've just finished watching the Netflix documentary about the Tour de France last year.

I can recommend it even if cycling is not your game.

Top teams have around 20 or so athletes. Second tier outfits, perhaps 10. They need to select 8 for the Tour. That will usually be a leader who might have a chance in the GC. There will also be one sprinter and perhaps two climbers. The others will be domestiques (or rolleurs).

The job of the domestique is to fetch and carry for the team and to put in a hard turn on the front to chase down breaks. Sprinters/climbers may get some stage wins.

A World Tour male pro cyclist has a minimum salary of around €60k.

A top, top rider (Pogacar, Bernal, van Aert, Vindegaard) might make into the millions. But we're talking perhaps 20 riders across 22 teams.

So the salary bill for say the top two/three players in a PL team would be enough to pay the whole team in the TdF.

Watch the documentary and see how those guys bury themselves for the team.

Contrast that with how some PL players hardly break sweat.
