A lot has been said about the abolition of the Goldbond scheme and how valuable it was. For those that may not know the history (including perhaps the board of directors!) here is an extract from Exceedingly Good Pies in 1994 and an interview with the then club Commercial Manager, Steve Walmsley.
"For the financial year ending 31st May 1994, the turnover on all Lotteries [this included scratch cards to be fair] was £370,000 of which the nett profit after wages, prizes and expenses was £169,000............ When you add the profit Les Duckworth has made from Advertising and Sponsorship, the nett profit for 1993-94 exceeded £250,000 .................. Steve is very concerned at the National Lottery which is due to start on 19th November. "I just don't know how it is going to affect us" he said."
Goldbond continued to thrive under the stewardship of Francis Collins and Richard Wild.
Times, habits (and lotteries) change but how we miss an income stream such as this. It was criminal that this was allowed to decline and then abolished. Crime number 2 was trying to replace it with an inferior product operated by a third party who still earn a good crust out of it. Crime number 3 and perhaps the biggest crime of all, knowing how successful it was and how crap the replacement is, is not giving notice to the current parasites and reintroducing our own Lottery.

£250k in 1994 is the equivalent of £623K today. , assuming no further development , had this enterprise had a modicum of time and energy spent on it over the years since, it would be delivering over £1m a year by now. And we wouldn't be up to our gills in doodoo.. |  | | |

That assumes that everybody was prepared to up their £1 weekly stake, and that many of the elderly participants are still alive. But you are right, how we'd welcome just £200k profit from such a venture today.
I recall us being told that the previous draw was being closed because it was found not to be compliant with the Lotteries Act. Were we every told in what way? Is it easy to start up again. | | | |

Unfortunately the Goldbond was loss making, at least in the last couple of years before it was closed.
The club would have had to have it as a 'loss leader' if it thought the benefit of having it would create enough goodwill and money elsewhere to sustain it. Sometimes this is an option, for instance with matchday programmes, but then profit will be made from the matchday experience as a whole so still worthwhile IMO. | | | |

See the link to clubforce above, its a software system to run a lottery and is used by St Johnstone .. people could drive up and talk to them if there was any interest...and because its all online they have hundreds of overseas lottery players too. Given the rate at which people are running away from living in Rochdale it would be ideal..... | | | |

Just had a quick look at the Springhill Hospice lottery on Companies House .. (Springhill Hospice ( Lottery) Ltd). .... their revenue seems to have fallen over the last couple of years but it looks as though they are joining a national hospice lottery organisation.. somthere may be " reasons"
In 2021 and 22 they had revenue of over half a million and gave away less than £100k in prizes. Administration was another £80k so in the region of £330 -350k to the Hospice in profits...I just shows what is possible even in a poor town like Rochdale. | | | |
