Wasnt it the Tories who tripled tuition fees in that period?
Which basically trippled the loan.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

IMO too many children are pressured into going to University by their parents. They end up doing a nothing course and get a nothing degree and come out not knowing what they are going to do next and with a mountain of debt. Student loans actually encourage youngsters to start adult life in debt and not see how serious debt actually is. Yes University is absolutely necessary for many but not everyone, Blair your stupid Ideology just doesn't work and causes more problems than it solves.

Spot on.

The moron Blair and his idiotic "50%" target was the start of this. Now careers that previously offered on the job training are asking for degrees, even ones like the Police and Nursing.

There should be far, far more openings for trades training or professional qualifications obtained whilst working. Mrs' Winston's son wanted to avoid Uni but basically had no choice due to the lack of apprenticeships in his preferred career path.

Tories and lib dem coalition tripled the fees in 2012 and then tories froze the income tax and Ni threshold , but Labour had the chance to unfreeze but she's extended that for another 3yrs.

Its states all of the above in the article

My eldest lad chose to go down the academic route and he got his degrees and gained a decent job from them and then advanced to an even better job, so he chose the right path.

It was Tony Blair that insisted 50% of people should go to University and introduced tuition fees for the privilege. Unfortunately another failed policy saw the income from tuition fees fall well short of the money needed to cover the Universities cost. If was actually the Conservative Liberal coalition government that increased the fees.

As I said University is definitely the correct pathway if you need the academic qualification to continue your chosen route, but far to many go to university just because their parents want the prestige of saying their child is in university or they go for the experience and have no idea what they want to do. For the record, I didn't go to university because I didn't need to for my career and have never regretted it. Two of my children did because they needed to for their career choice, but that was 30 years ago.

Yes, under the Coalition David Willetts and Vince Cable took the lead in working up the student loans policy. Don't underestimate Vince's culpability.

Higher Education has become a scam, and Universities basically businesses, largely dependent upon foreign students paying ever higher fees.

Slash the number of Universities. Make the pretend ones become colleges and polytechnics again. Offer Government funding for courses critical to the National Interest (medical, STEM or similar), charge double for people who want to do Gender Studies.

I was listening to an interview earlier with a doctor. He has been paying off his 50,000 plus loan for ten years and he now owes 72000. There should be no interest on these loans. The figures are horrendous and the policy made my politicians who didn't have student loans so it had no effect on them. My daughter's three years are already over £60000and that interest will continue to accrue faster than she can pay off unless she get's that top law job but all the graduates are chasing those roles.
