| Dirty Business Channel 4 23:09 - Feb 28 with 538 views | majorraglan | Just finished sitting through the 3 episodes. It’s a drama documentary so there’ll be an element of poetic licence, but it’s based on the work of a couple of guys who investigated water pollution and discharges in their local river. I have to say i found it compelling viewing and a brilliant program , BUT to be honest I’m @@@@ing raging !!!! Everything thats taken place since privatisation is scandalous, people should be doing time! We often hear about the antiquated sewerage system, Victorian blah blah blah, but depending on who you take your figure from the actual amount of Victorian infrastructure is between 6% and 12%. Most of our sewerage and water infrastructure was modernised in the 60’s and 70’s, so some of what were being told about investment in infrastructure is down to the fact that nowt has been done in the last 40 years. We’ve been played for mugs. Half a dozen or so years ago, one of my kids had Ecoli 157 and nearly died, so watching the program and learning about the little girls death brought a lot of what we went through back and made it very poignant. My child spent 12 days in a foreign hospital and it was touch and go for a long time. If you haven’t seen the program, give it a go on catch up. https://www.channel4.com/progr [Post edited 28 Feb 23:15]

| Dirty Business Channel 4 on 09:21 - Mar 1 with 415 views | Dr_Winston | It was made by Channel 4, which is the television equivalent of the Guardian, so I'd take its "conclusions" with a pinch of salt. There's a lot of pushback on social media about how accurate it actually is. A lot of the water companies are being poorly run for sure, but pollution is way, way down on what it was during the 80's. Lots of room for improvement, especially on Nitrates, but things have significantly improved over the last 20/30 years. I can remember the banks of the Tawe being orange in some parts when I was a kid because of the shit being washed down it. Not seen that in decades. | |
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

I commented on poetic licence and of course it’s between glammed up for TV, but there’s still a fair bit of substance to the programme. Some of the investigative journalism undertaken by C4 and the Guardian is second to none. [Post edited 2 Mar 21:49]

| Dirty Business Channel 4 on 23:54 - Mar 1 with 302 views | Demitrius | It's a common misconception that Channel 4 produces its own programming and content. It's a public service broadcaster but unlike the BBC and its licence fee it gets its revenue from advertsing and other commercial ventures. It commissions content from independent production companies like Endemol etc who pitch an idea and are then told yay or nay to go off and make it. The requirement to obtain all content externally was stipulated in its licence back in 1982. Even C4 News is produced by ITN and broadcast from its playout centre in Greys Inn Rd and not at Horseferry. or Leeds Or at least it did when I worked there over 15 years ago. Film 4 is somewhat an exception in that it was originally Channel 4 Films a private production company that was the brainchild of Dickie Attenborough and funded by C4 itself, No idea how they got around the rules on that one but I never did find out although I suspect the co-production element with other film companies and that the films are for wider commercial release and not specifically made for TV like the BBC's Screen Two series whch gave us Gary Oldman's The Firm etc... Anyway a moot point but thought it may be of interest.... :) I take your point about the Guardian though which is why so many Tories from Thatcher to Sunak have wanted to privitise it. | |
