You'll have to add a Part 3, Nick, if you want to include the most important Saints game played on that date: the 1979 League Cup Final.

Thanks. I could have written a lot more, especially about my old friend, Terry Gennoe. I remember celebrating with him after he'd played his finest game for Saints in the 2nd leg of the semi-final v Leeds. Unfortunately, the final was one of his worst games and he never really recovered from it. He was sent on loan to Palace before eventually having a long career at Blackburn, both as player and coach. Ironically, Peter Shilton, who'd been Forest's goalkeeper in the final, then moved to Saints.

Crowd noise at English football reached its peak in the late 70s, so that was a VERY noisy final. Heysel knocked the heart out of football crowds in the 80s and then, of course, came all-seaters.

I was never a great fan of Gennoe, he was a good goal line keeper and shot stopper but his command of the box was not good enough, in Lawrie McMenemy's diary of a season he speaks of Ted Bates warning him that Gennoe's timing was suspect.

I think you are he never recovered from it, he played against Arsenal two days later at the Dell and fumbled a cross on to the bar for Arsenal to equalise, he would play just once more after that season and although he would play the opening 13 League games of the next season it was clear he was lacking in confidence.

It was good to see he had a long career at Blackburn and indeed in football
