Oh for another Niemi or Flowers. We desperately need a top quality keeper but would imagine the money will be spent elsewhere, especially as we are so low on full backs.

People forget how long it took for flowers to blossom as a keeper at the dell after joining as a 19 year old in 1986.

In fact many comparisons can be drawn between Him and Angus Gunn.

In his first season he struggled his debut a 5-1 defeat at Manchester United, no great shakes in those days, he played a few games at the end of the season and started the next season as number 1, but his form was a little eratic and John Burridge took over for the rest of the season

So first tow seasons only 18 games played, third season Burridge played most of the games and Flowers got just 7, imagine the outrage about poor signings that would have raged if social media had been around then.

In his fourth season he established himself, but it should be remembered that Chris Nicholl didnt appear convinced and signed Ian Andrews and dropped Flower for three games in march, Andrews wasnt great so they put flowers back in and now he was truly number 1 and would be for 5 straight seasons before going to Blackburn.

Back then players were given time, now Flowers would probably have been shipped out after his first 3 seasons
