I have been a bit quiet on here this week due to a week away in Belgium, taking a look at Waterloo, Antwerp and the WW1 sites in the Ypres area, here are a few things I noticed along the way. 1. The Waterloo site seems to glorify Napoleon, the gift shop had Napoleon t shirts, mugs, books, you name it, whereas a small fridge magnet was all you could buy for the Duke of Wellington, I found it strange that he is glorified so much in France and the French speaking area of Belgium, given that there is little difference between Napoleon & Hitler in what they did, ie conquering much of Europe and beyond and being responsible for the death of millions, albeit he couldnt do it on the industrial scale that Hitler had to hand. 2. Fuel in both France and Belgium used to be cheaper than in the UK before covid, now it is much dearer, around 1.85 for unleaded, so around 30p a litre dearer than over here. 3. Beer & food is also much dearer, as is food in supermarkets 4. Antwerp seemed to be 100% Saints, the only football shirt I saw anyone wearing was a fella in a Saints shirt, albeit the 2016/17 version. 5. Belgium does not seem to have many road signs once you are off the big main roads, there were no signs of how to get out of Antwerp and the sat nav was of no use when you come across a road that is just completely shut for no discernible reason, that was a recurring theme. | |
