If you scored you went off and into the next round. Remaining player was out. The trick was to goal hang and try and get a deflection. Many happy hours playing footy in the park.

There was also a game where you could only score with a header or volley, anybody remember what this one was called.

28's round our way, because it was the first one to 28 points. 1 point for a volley 2 for a header and I think the goalie got points for catches and saves [Post edited 16 Dec 5:39]

If I am right it was played because you didnt have enough for a proper game. So you usually had one goal with a goalkeeper and a couple of defenders and then 3 or 4 attackers, as you say you got points for a header or volley and I think you got double or an extra point of they were from outside the 6 yard box

Yeah, that sounds like it, we called it, as I said 28s but some people said Headers and Volleys

I remember playing this down Daisy Dip in Swaythling. Kids still play it now, my lad and his mates call it Wembley. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That was heads and volleys in Liverpool or 60 seconds. You had 60 seconds to score one, then start again if you scored, then two goals, three goals etc. When the 60 seconds were up (the goalie had to shout out the seconds, often being accused of going too fast and having to go back a few), the game only ended when the goalie caught the ball from a cross or a shot with the outfield player touching the ball last going in goal. It was brutal. Often the fat kid would go first in goal and in the extra time bit would be subjected to one player flicking it up and the one with the hardest shot viciously smashing blammers towards the goal. Great days. Kids wouldn’t have a clue these days.

Ah happy days, long summer evenings on the rec’ playing until it was so dark that you couldn’t see each other, then home for a thick ear from your mum for getting in late.
