Not sure I would describe him as a very good manager,
His first season saw a poor start and a poor finish to the season but a nice run in the middle where he won a few games to get a 12th place finish.
His second season saw what became known as the great escape season only 3 wins & 5 draws in the first half of the season covering 20 games, with 5 games to go were all but down but a comeback against Saints to draw 3-3 launched a 5 game unbeaten run to the season with 3 wins & 2 draws & we stayed up 4th from bottom
1999/2000 saw another poor first half of the season with Jones ensconced in allegations against him for his time as a care worker, he put himself before the club and refused to step down, despite the fact that he would probably have been sacked if Lowe hadn't felt some sense of sticking by him due to his situation.
Glenn Hoddle then came in and turned the season around .
He underperformed with a decent squad, he didn't get us relegated but not a very good manager for us

He was neither good nor terrible for me. He was perhaps an "okay" manager at the time, who did a reasonable job in keeping us up, then a respectable 12th place finish. He wasn't very charasmatic, and had a few issues with Le Tissier. He took over from Sounness and Merrington previous to that, who both only just kept Saints up on the final day of the season. I seem to remember some great games and results under Jones, beating Liverpool away and Newcastle at home in the rain at the Dell, to the demise of Ruud Gullet. In his final season before Hoddle came in, it was going to pot on the pitch but he lasted about 3 years wasn't it, and that was good going at the time!

Hang on.
He inherited a team which against the odds stayed up on the last day of the previous season, and arguably our best player from that season walked out on us (Berkovic), and he had little to spend.
We were a highly entertaining occasionally brilliant shambles under Souness.
He made some horrendous signings (Lee Todd most notably) but he quite notably got us up the table.
The following season was undeniably a bad one; the Kevin Davies money was almost wholly wasted and Carlton Palmer downed tools.
Overall though, I think he did well and he left Hoddle the bones of a half-decent team.

The squad he inherited wasn't bad, but the first season was horrendous till we had a burst of wins in Oct/November and then again in January February.
His second season was a disaster and almost ended in relegation, we were only saved by the team itself rallying along with the fans
