| Good Quote From Danny Dyer 18:13 - Oct 26 with 2146 views | SaintNick | I can't argue with this. “The team you support, picks you. I see loads of people following teams they’ve got absolutely no connection to. You should be supporting the side you’ve been born to support. If you’re not from Liverpool, I just don’t get why you’d want to support Liverpool. Yeah, your able to choose whoever you want, but you’ll never get that true feeling of being in a ground where everyone’s from the same place, speaks the same, and lives it the same way. That’s what it’s like being a West Ham fan. We all sort of know each other, and these big clubs turn up expecting that they will take three points. Most of the time they do, but every now and then you pull off a massive result, and it means everything to the lads in the ground. If you’re a Cockney supporting Liverpool, you’ll never get that feeling. Singing songs about places you’ve got no connection to, it just doesn’t sit right with me. I’ve always found it strange. And when you’ve got two Londoners, one supporting United and the other Liverpool, arguing about their rivalry… it just feels off. That rivalry comes from history, from the docks, from working-class roots. It runs deep. If you’re from somewhere like Colchester, go and support Colchester. That’s your club.” | |

Just listen to the phone ins on Talk sport and 5 Live, the dribbling Liverpool fans ringing in from all parts of the globe are 99% dribblers and have never even been to Mickey Land. Only take seriously the ones with Scouse accents [Post edited 26 Oct 20:04]

| Good Quote From Danny Dyer on 19:03 - Oct 26 with 1976 views | shotters | Whilst I agree with him who are you supposed to support if you live in a town without a club? I grew up in a satellite town with no club of note when I was young, the most local league club at the time was Aldershot and no-one from Woking is going to support those w@nkers Thankfully the decision was already made for me as I've said previously due to family connections to Southampton but technically one of the clubs in south west London would be closest as easiest for me to get to | |

Obviously if your town has not club you have to support one near by, so I think it is more about region than the town/city itself

| Good Quote From Danny Dyer on 21:58 - Oct 26 with 1612 views | A1079 | Generally agree with this. Where it differs slightly is where you follow your parents. I was born and bred Hampshire so it was never a debate that I would support a Hampshire team and geographically (thankfully) Southampton was the nearest Hampshire club - however, in terms of miles, Reading were the nearest team but I did not want any relationship with a club outside of Hampshire. However, shortly after my son was born we moved to Yorkshire and technically his nearest clubs (as he was growing up) were either Hull City or York City - I have no issue with either of them, but he supports Saints because I naturally took him to games with me as a child and even now he is grown up he will go to Southampton games. | | | |
| Good Quote From Danny Dyer on 08:09 - Oct 27 with 1228 views | SaintBrock | How quaint, pooor old Danny is still living in the 1930's. The working class roots nonsense was swept away decades ago. Who still lives in the towns in which they were born? How many players in a local team were born there or have any connection to the place? The world has moved on Danny or hadn't you noticed. We live in an international age, people live where life takes them, be it in the UK or abroad. If they follow football they can support who they like. Liverpool or Man City or Southampton are just brand names. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

This I agree with Both my parents are from Hampshire and my Dad supported Saints I was born and bred in London (plenty of stick at school for not being spurs or Arsenal) but followed them cos he did and now my son does the same

If you're from Woking you support Woking. Ditto Aldershot. I've been to a couple of games between them and they usually double the gate from around 2500 to around 5,000. There's plenty of atmosphere and the football is of the take no prisoners variety - if you get kicked, don't roll around in agony, get up or better still don't fall over. Like Nick I'm a big supporter of non league football - I'd sooner watch Bashley in the rain than Chelsea any day.

So if you live/brought up in Eastleigh, would you support them or Saints? Ok, Eastleigh have only really progressed to where they are now in the last 10-15 years or so, but I'm sure there are Eastleigh supporters now if a certain age that used to follow Saints

That's got to be one of the strangest posts i've read on here. The idea saints are a brand name is odd enough by itself, but if you follow that logic than why don't people support Brazil or Spain in international tournaments? Because England is just a brand name. I've said many times i don't support southampton football club, i come from southampton and it has a football club. It's the same reason my siblings support saints, their kids support saints, my mum supports saints, my uncle supports saints, my gran supported saints, and my great gran supported saints. The club represents my history, the place i grew up (and love), and is where my family and friends still live, and ultimately the place i'd love to one day move back too. The football bit is almost secondary really.

Well I was born in London, went to school in portsmuff and live in Essex so I guess that makes me a cockney skate hybrid vvanker, not fit to support the red and white. I’ll get my coat… …Just hang on there a minute….!

What's wrong with supporting more than one team. I support Saints but also support Eastleigh.( I played for them when they were Swaythling Athletic) I believe that we should be supporting all your local teams. although I can't call my myself a Bournemouth supporter I do follow them & want them to do well. Much to this fanzone annoyance I don't actually hate Pompey, I don't support them but I do not hate them. I want to see all of our South Coast teams doing well.

Again that's a very odd post, i think you're letting your insecurity show. At no point did i say you were wrong or shouldn't, i just summed up what it means for the vast majority. One of our group - who many on here know i'm sure - is a saints fan from essex, his old man is from southampton so that's why he does, doesn't mean won't don't rip him and call him an arsenal fan mind. My personal view though is i just find it deeply weird if you have no historical link to the place, a lot like Danny Dyer says what's the point if it's not part of you? Or maybe it's just that for me football isn't so much about football, the club is about identity. I think international football is a good tell of this, people wouldn't suddenly call themselves France, Brazil or Spain fans if they had no connection to those countries, but for some weird reason if you point out that's how it should be at club level too people get ancy
| Good Quote From Danny Dyer on 10:19 - Oct 28 with 73 views | shotters | Not having a Hampshire accent has been handy on the occasions I’ve been in the home ends at Millwall and QPR Just amp up the Woking mockney and blend into the surroundings I have to admit I have got a bit pissy on a couple of occasions when I’ve been asked why I support Saints in the past but that’s just me | |
