Huddersfield Town v Southampton Your Report added at 21:26:55
Complete lack of ambition on the ball in the second half left us vulnerable to an equaliser. Smallbone was the biggest culprit, always passing the ball the way he was facing, invariably backwards. Even when in plenty of space he never took the ball on the half turn and moved it forwards.

We should have had either Stewart or Adams on from the start.

Excellent all round performance. Apart from a few counter attacks, the only time we looked in trouble was when Romeu was pulled backed to centre half. That lost us control of midfield until he was moved back. He had an outstanding game. The big difference now is that we have 11 players in position and contributing 100%. Armstrong and Elyanoussi make a huge difference compared with Redmond, Walcott and Djenepo.

When Newcastle were down to 9 men we still had 4 or 5 in front of their 2 banks of 4. No idea as to how to take advantage of the 2 extra men. We learnt nothing being whacked by Utd.
Too much sideways passing, too slow to move the ball forward. JWP is a great from a dead ball, but will always prefer a sideways pass.

Playing 5 in midfield meant that we were almost able to suppress Grealish (not quite), but despite dominating the first half we never managed a shot on target. Of the 5, Romeu and Diallo looked good together but none of Walcott, Redmond or Armstrong were able to offer enough creatively.

A brave defensive performance, VVD was absolutely outstanding. That having been said I agree with the other contributors about our total lack of attacking ideas and ambition. Pre-match Claude said we wouldn't park the bus but would continue with our normal attacking approach. We certainly continued with our normal approach but there was no element of attacking involved. I haven't been able to get to every game this season, but based on what I have seen this performance was no surprise. Liverpool weren't prepared to let us to keep possession and comfortably ferry passes backwards and forwards across our own half. We don't seem to have any other game.

I cannot see many wins coming our way this season. We were lucky to come away with a point.

I agree that we were unlucky to come away with nothing. However, we showed a lack of tactical awareness and flexibility. It was obvious from early on that Morgan and Huth were able to dominate Pelle in the air, yet we continued to pump in hopeful crosses often from only just inside the half way line. We should have had Mane on Huth's shoulder throughout. The only way through that defence was on the deck as was proved in the first half.

Good defensive performance, especially from Fraser Forster. Van Dyke also excelled. However, we are really missing Steve Davis . We have plenty of defensive cover in midfield, Romeu, Clasie, Wanyama but nothing creative which means that we can only make a limited number of chances and cannot dominate the opposition.

I never mentioned Ward-Prowse, which is because I just can't see what useful contribution he makes.

Two mistakes cancelled out all the good work in the first half. Poor header by Martinez to set up first WH goal, no header by Yoshida for the second.
