Southampton At Norwich City The Verdict
at 17:27:02

many good points here and obviously a lot of frustration by us, the fans. As a former keeper (dont hold that against me), McCarthy holds 90% blame on those two goals, period. Ralph does need to take the blame for the subs, as Romeo and Che should not have been taken off, IMO. I suspect Che was taken off due to playing mid-week, but he is in form goal scoring form and you dont take that man off period. I think missing Stu, NR, MD made Ralph chose in error to put on Theo. Walcott needs to sit the bench as he has nothing to offer anymore as he was walking half the time. If Ralph cant see that in the after-game analysis then he deserves all future criticism regarding Theo - PERIOD!

Ok, not worth getting all pissed off again, but lets hope these guys put hard work in the training this week and come prepared to fight 90+ minutes against Liverpool. Because if they dont it will be an ugly game.

Finally, I understand the frustration many fans have with Ralph and some of it is very justified, but I dont think the Owner/Board will get rid of him unless someone comes in and pays a lot of $$$, which will not happen if we play inconsistently like we did on Sunday. Remember Gao is trying to sell the club and is trying to portray a stable environment to get that done.

Southampton At West Ham United The Verdict
at 20:25:46

So I was waiting to be able to reply and many of you summed many of my feelings. So I am going to take a 25,000ft view of our team.
(1) With our current owner, things will not get any better as even Les Reed stated that Goa can't take any money out of China to invest in the club. We need a new owner or at least partial owners to have a chance to improve.
(2) I am a Ralph fan, but think he needs to change his philosophy of passing out from the back as it has caught us too many times and cost us goals and points. Sometimes on a goal kick, you just kick it up field - period.
(3) I think Ingsy will leave and hand in a transfer request after yesterday. The look on his face was WTF am I doing here. I saw him run the channel 3 times in the 2nd half and nobody sent him through.
(4) We need older experienced players. We are too young and do not have the steel needed to comeback or hold games. Don't care about the club's or RH young player philosophy on this, we need some veterans to teach the other players.
(5) Only the following players would I consider safe from a transfer or dismissal: Ings, Che, JWP, RWP, JB, Salisu, Armstrong, Djenepo (one more season), Diallo, FF, Tella, Obifemi, OR, JV (one more season).
(6) We need the following types players: GK, LB, (2) RB, CM Attacking : This could increase if we get rid of a lot of the dead weight and bloated salaries. It could/should increase to 4 more players if possible.
(7) Stop the 4-2-2-2 formation. I know he says its a 4-4-2, but that is a lie. Either stick to a real 4-4-2 or go to a 3-5-3 or a 4-3-3 or even a 4-3-2-1. I think this is where Ralph needs to work on a Plan B.
(8) If RH is not provided any real funds or players, then I think he could walk away and/or he will not last til Christmas. Our current players and lack of depth will not allow his idea of high-press football. And since he doesnt seem to have a Plan b, it it will be the end.
(9) If a manager change is needed, who will we get as everyone knows that we do not have deep pockets. I dont want another half-wit old manager who is looking for a paycheck (i.e. Mark Hughes).
(10) Owning a football team is a rich man/woman's game. It is a hobby at best and surely a folly at worst. But none-the-less, if you are an owner and want to succeed, you need to spend your own money to make that happen.

Finally, someone made a comment a month or so back about wanting us to be relegated so they could enjoy the football more. After this season and feeling like we will not get many players in (or get rid of any of the deadwood), I think this might not such a horrible idea for 1 reason only - Goa will then have to sell the team for a loss and then we might be able to rebuild. I know this sounds drastic and a bit loony, but the frustration of not being able to properly compete makes watching the game not much fun.

Now we wait to see what the summer brings and I hope all of you have a great and happy summer - Best from America.

Southampton V Leeds United The Verdict
at 23:44:33

So many hear are quick to throw out the baby with the bath water. I understand the criticism, but I think there is more happening behind the scenes than we know. I will say that after the game yesterday, I agree with all who say to get rid of Redmond - his time has come and he needs to go, but the problem is I doubt anyone will take him. As for Djenepo, I am not sure what game the detractors were watching. He created some decent chances and causes the defense some problems - He is a better option than Redmond for sure. I also agree that Foster needs to be our starter. The 1st goal was all on AM. He should have been barreling out to get that ball. You play until the whistle. As for Jack, I agree that he is a ok squad player, but also think he might be a better midfielder as he seems to do better when going forward. Jan V is a tough one for me as I think he offers enough to us especially his long ball to the wings. That can break a defense very quickly. But if MU or MC come calling for $40M, then sell him BUT you have to use the money to buy more players. Finally, I have not been able to find out how much Theo is being paid for the next 2 years. I think he could be useful as a off-the-bench player. I also think we need some older players who come from a winning mentality club. He might be very useful in the dressing room. We need someone like that on defense for sure. Some real metal and who can teach the younger lads what it means to have a winning mentality. So one more game and the the summer and all the chaos that it brings. I hope the following happens: (1) we get a more involved and productive owner; (2) we are able to keep Ingsy; (3) we get rid of the dead weight players on loan even for a few pounds; (4) we are able to invest in 4-5 new players at key positions. I know this is asking for a lot, but one can hope and dream. COYR

Southampton At Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict
at 01:04:48

Ok, so I am as a frustrated as most of you and this season has been a bumpy ride. As you can see in the posts there is a lot of passion for our club and this forum allows you to voice it good or bad. I am trying to figure out this last game and I think I may have discovered our potentially fundamental flaw in RH game tactics. In the 1st half Spuds were playing their typical ball control (side-to-side etc.) and that allowed our pressing game to flourish. Then in the second half, they abandoned that and move purely to one-touch ball and straight at us. This bypassed our trapping zones and exposed our wings. I am not saying that this is all the problems, as I agree as someone said we are lightweight in midfield. I know RH doesn't want older players but we could use some stout veterans who have won hardware to help shore up games and bring a winning mentality. I think the players get depressed fast the moment we lose a lead. This needs to change somehow and I think some veterans would help greatly.

Next, while some are arguing why we didn't do a like-for-like swap when Ingsy got hurt (again), I think RH was trying to solidify the midfield, but then he should have gone to a 4-5-1 and bottle the midfield. I think this is where Ralph got it wrong. Next, in the 2nd half we gave the ball away stupidly so many time I lost count after 18. Nobody was talking and without fans, it's easy to hear people yelling etc.

I do not think we should sign Walcott unless it is for pennies. He was so missing in action, I thought we were playing with 10 men the 1st half. Also, people are slamming Djenepo and it is easy to do, but I watched the replay (multiple times) from the back view and it is clear that the Spuds player kicked Djenepo. The side view of the replay makes it look like Djenepo take his foot out prior to the shot (and yes on the line). But then if that was the case, how does the ball go to the right of our goalpost? Enough of that.

Finally, I know Nick doesn't like this, but I think our main problem and why we will never progress is our owner. All the excuses will be made (the club needs to be self sustaining, blah, blah, blah), but he is responsible for not investing in the team. He bought this to be a show piece for his sports program/company in China and now that his empire has collapsed, he is trying to greedy for extra $20M during a potential sale. I know there are internal pressures he cant control, but he is not suited to be a PL owner. I suspect that this summer, RH will meet with the board and ask to sell 4-6 players and want 10. He will be told he can have 4-5 depending on how we sell and to promote from the ranks. This will cause RH to rethink his time at our club and when a decent club comes for him, he will walk. If BM come calling as suggested in the papers, he will walk no matter what and then many will be like "why?" and the simple answer will the owner and his lack of ambition and funds for the club. I know some of you will say good riddance, but be careful what you wish for as many on this site wanted Ms. Leiberr to sell and she did and look who we got now. The grass isnt always greener on the other side of the fence.

Well only time will tell what happens, but I hope we can turn the corner and find a few positives and win a game or two before the season ends. COYR

Time For The Premier League To Unite And Let The Big Six Go
at 02:13:42

So some very good points to this article and by some. I think the big 6 leaving could be very good for football BUT two major things have to happen: (1) They leave the league completely and are not allowed to have a "B" team in the EPL; (2) The FA powers that be do not cave to point one and state, "if you go, you go". My fear is that the FA will be cowards and try and compromise with the teams and will allow a "B" team, which will end the EPL. I also think some of the FA will most likely get bribed or paid off to make a compromise happen. Finally, as an American, I would like to apologize to you all for the asshat owners of Liverpool and MU. They are greedy SOBs and do not understand the history and roots of football in England. They are also hypocrites as if the FSG group tried to move the Boston Red Sox baseball team from Boston for more money in Florida lets say, they would be looking over their shoulders as people would be coming to kill them literally. That is how fanatical the Boston fans are. So, I say let the big 6 leave as long as they go AND never come back - They will find the sea of loneliness a bitter pill to swallow.

Southampton At West Browmwich Albion The Verdict
at 20:05:23

So I will agree with all of you who said this was a dismal display. I think Nick is right that a lot of the players were thinking about Sunday and not this game. I also agree with "Flamingbonkers', that our midfield has not been the same without OR. We are losing the ball to much in midfield in the center of the pitch and one easy long pass sends a forward through (like the 3rd goal). I personally think our defensive problems start with the wingback formation. Both KWP and RB are playing way to high up the pitch and that basically leaves us 2 CB to cover the area. Neither CB have the speed to need to do this. This leaves us severely exposed. Next, TW needs to sit and Che needs to start, period. Also, Redmond and Armstrong were the only ones actually attacking and Ingsy was trying to hard to make the perfect play. Does he have a left foot? Anyways, I hope RH has put a boot up their backsides and actually watches the tapes to make adjustments otherwise Sunday will be painful. I would not be surprised to see a back 5 on Sunday. COYR

Southampton V Brighton The Verdict
at 23:34:12

Some very good and not so good comments about the game. Many valid on both sides. For me the second half was complete crap. What sumed it up was when we were clearing the ball and it went out of bounds and JB started yelling at the midfield to move so he could pass and he just shook his head in disgust. I think there is lots of frustration in our defense. Obviously I dont know what Ralph told them, but I think RB and KWP were playing to high and JB/JV were not moving it fast enough. At the end you saw RB, MD and CA with in 3 feet of each other and nobody made a run down the wing. What I cant understand is why the heck none of our players run the channel. I counted over 12 times that Che or Tella made a run when RB or KWP had the abll on the wing and NOT once did these two pass it forward. Don't even get me started on NR. RB was abysmal yesterday and he stopped the play forward over 15 times. His head is too big right now among the contract talks. He needs a kick in the butt and a reminder that we resurrected his flagging career. In the last 30 mins JWP had to come back in line with the CBs to get the ball to try and play it forward and that should never happen. Also, did anyone else think that all the lucky bounces went Brighton's way. Every time we were clearing it, it would hit a player and deflect right to one of theirs. Finally, I agree that Ralph's system has exhausted us and needs to be tweaked. He needs to accept that we need to play a bit more cautious to pace the game out. Well on to the FA Cup game and all I can say is lets see what happens cause at this point I am not convinced we will show up and play good football. COYR.

Southampton At Manchester City The Verdict
at 15:22:03

Wow - Some real "sharp" comments here today. Like everyone has stated, we were the architects of our own downfall, by shipping them goals. Che, Salusi, and Stephans committing the turnovers that led to goals. In addition, you can add RB for being out of position on the 1st goal. I know he is not a RB, but ebing a LB he should have not been so far up the pitch when they had the ball for that long diagonal. Everyone makes mistakes, but we seem to do more than others sometimes and against MC you get punished for it. I am not being negative, but JS (playing out of position) was by far the most lackluster player we had. This was his time to show RH his desire and value, yet he walked half the time and was not sure where to play. For Redmond, he has his issues for sure, but last night he ran his socks off and I could here him yelling to the other players to press and move up, so he was much more involved than others. Positives were that Che scored on 9well two with the offsides one) and we only had one injury. Yes, I would have wanted to get a point but I am looking big picture.

Finally, I agree with RH in his game management for this one as he was looking down the road and rightfully so. This was a "free" game and our concern should be Brighton. Look we lost Djnepo last night to injury. Imaging if we lost KWP, Diallo, or Tella. All three of these are most likely starting on Sunday, but if their out because of an injury picked up on this game, we would have bigger issues. So, everyone take a deep breath, and be ready to cheer on our team on Sunday, cause it will be a tight affair, but with a win, we can stop looking over our shoulders and look up. COYR

Why Southampton's Trip To The Etihad Shows The Premier League Is Dying
at 16:03:42

So, there are some good points Nick makes and same with the panel about the US. Two points that people are missing here that I think play a factor. (1) Agent fees - in the US, the agent is paid normally 10-15% of the salary by the player. This takes away the incentive of the agent constantly trying to sell his player to the highest bidder so that he can make millions on the transfers. This would have a stabilizing effect on a lot of the "non - super-stars". (2) Everyone is concerned with the TV money, but in today's technology, if the big six left, each team could do a pay-per-view style system. In the US, many colleges have this and earn big money just from their fans and dont have to deal with the tv networks. Even small colleges with no more than a few thousand students are doing this. And away teams could pay a small fee to tap into the home teams feed, so that the can provide all the games. Finally, a salary cap could work, if you could solve the agent problem described above and more importantly solve the greed from the super rich owners, who do not want to be handcuffed so they can buy anyone anytime they want. Just a few ideas to think about.

The Two Sides To Danny Ings Southampton Transfer Saga
at 19:16:28

Teamster1 - I noticed that too, that not a single teammate came over to see how he was doing or when he walked off. I think that is telling, as earlier in the year when he had the knee injury, JWP and a few others came over to see how he was. I agree with a lot of the points made here and ElijahK and Halftimeorange made very interesting points about if Ingsy stays. I unfortunately think today's footballers no longer care about talisman status (i.e. Le God) and care only about $$$. This thing about winning trophies is all bs. Anyone who has played this game and really loves it, always wants to play and start. Going to another big 6 club to ride the bench would never cross your mind unless it is for $$$. Also, anyone who thinks MC is looking at Danny to replace Aguero is drunk or high. MC are looking a players like Halaand, not Ingy. A for Tots, he would only start if Kane was sold or inured. The last factor we must consider is ego. I point to Schniderling, Wanyama, LLalana, and even Lambert (too a small amount). Their egos made them believe that they deserved to be at a top-6 club and pushed for it. Look where they are now. Lambert later admitted it was a mistake to go to Liverpool. I saw a recent interview with Matt LeTissier, who stated that he never regretted playing only at our club and never thought of leaving. He appreciated the fans, the respect and the adoration. Look at him now, years later, people still buying him pints and every announcer I have seen remarks on his tenure at the club and how unique it was as no footballer today has the loyalty anymore. So it now lies in Ingy's hands, stay and have the chance to be a talisman, or leave for maybe $400K/year more to be a sub/part time player and be forgotten in the annuals of football history. I agree if he doesn't want to sign, fine, tell him he will have to see his contract out and he can leave for free. For 10M, we will not be able to buy a striker anyways. Finally, I am curious to see what happens if we get new ownership over the summer. Cheers.

Southampton At Sheffield United The Verdict
at 16:00:09

Well we got the win and we can all breathe a little better. Lots of good comments here and just to add a few. Diallo was rusty but man did he almost cost us right at the halftime. I think FF had good game and it was so obvious that SU were fouling him on every cross. He seems to have realized he cant let crosses come in without doing something in his 6-yard box. I also like that he came out 3 times to clear an over the top ball which shows his positioning was very good to support the CBs. I think that Tella's performance is a sign to Redmond that his time as a starter is over and that is why he took that shot on the counter attack, instead of slotting in SA for an easy goal. I think that Minamino played much better, especially on his defensive duties as he tracked back many times to shut down cross of put a body in between passing lanes. One thing I noticed about him was that when he got the ball on a turnover, he immediately was looking to counter attack, especially in the second half. To me that is positive play. Lots of positives here that we can build on and I hope that we keep a level head and just play a simple strong game against MC this week. COYR.

P.S. - I wont speed about Ingsy as there is something wrong there and I think we will only find out what after the fact.

Massive Two Weeks Coming Up In Southampton's Season

I am hoping that the players are starting to believe again in themselves. We cant be complacent against SU, but if we play to our fullest and give a full team effort, I think we will be able to get the win. That first win will give the guys belief and that can seriously translate into a overall positivity in the atmosphere around St. Mary's. Lots to play for and we need to take the first step against SU and get a win, then I think other pieces of the puzzle will fall into place and we will see ourselves looking up instead of down. COYR.

Southampton Injury Crisis Worsens With Romeu Out For The Season
at 02:15:46

Wow - we cant catch a break. I like the idea of playing JS in midfield. Since he is more defense minded, you would think he would sit back more to protect the CBs. This might work as long as JWP is yelling at him and directing the midfield. Also, SA might be able to play the midfield and the JWP would have to sit back. I agree that we need to start this game parking the bus and being more defensive minded to see how Everton come at us. If we hold well for 20-30 minutes, then maybe press a little and see if we can cause EV to make some mistakes. I think we will squeak by this season as I think we will get at least 9 points form the remain games, but it will be a nail-bitter. We need some games to go our way this weekend. Until Monday, COYR.

Southampton V Chelsea The Verdict
at 17:38:29

Nick, you and everyone have summed up the game pretty well. If you think the pundits/announcers in the UK were biased, you should have heard them in the US on NBCSports. They picked Mason mount as MOTM, when IF anyone on Chelsea should have got it, it was Kante. All they did for 90 minutes was talk about Chelsea this, Chelsea that. They even had the balls to say Chelsea were short of player due to injury and didn't mention our issues. It was a joke and an embarrassment to them. They even said that the fouls on Djenepo were not malicious (maybe right) but didnt warrant cards at all. The the showed the replays several times and they said "well maybe a yellow might be warranted". Anyways, they were clowns and NBCSports should be ashamed of the biased towards the BIG clubs. See it week in week out. Well we have Leeds that we need to win to really turn the corner and if everyone plays like this on Tuesday, then we should be in good shape, BUT we can't underestimate Leeds even in their current poor form. Southampton V Chelsea The Preview

Nick,

I like the idea of changing formation to a back three and flooding midfield. I think Forster should start but not because of what you think AM did on these goals. The 3 goals AM has been from acute angles were just good goals. All keepers drop to their knees at the angles as you are taught the low shots are the highest percentage (attacker) and hardest to stop (keeper). I just think AM needs a rest and FF has been playing well. Pluss FF will boot the ball before trying to make a tricky pass and at this time, that is what we need. Well I will be up super early to watch the game and hope my weekend starts of well. COYR

Southampton V Wolverhampton Wanderers The Verdict
at 17:06:54

Well I can see the frustration here on the comments. I am not going to even discuss the game as it is what it is. What I do want to say is that there needs to be consistency by the refs. I think that if there is a question about a penalty or goal, that the ref on the field must go to the monitor and look for himself at all the angles. I know this will slow the game down, but the VAR referee has no stack in the game and sits around waiting. A poor/incorrect decision by the ref changes the momentum of the game and can cost teams points. We are on a combination run of bad luck, weak bench, injuries, poor play, lack of confidence and RH not willing to park the bus if needed. Not sure I can add anything else, but I will still support the club. It's just hard to watch feeling that something bad/unlucky will happen to our team. On to the next.

Southampton At Newcastle The Verdict
at 21:43:44

Yes like many of you, I was dismayed by our performance yesterday. Sandywelch is spot on as JS was directly "non-involved" in the 1st two goals. I watched them in replay several times and even the announcers made a point on how JS was out of position on both, especially the 1st goal. He was playing RB not RM. He pressed the ball and didnt get it and stood watching as the pass went over his head and MSM was in the box to lay it off for the first goal. I think everyone would agree that JS at RB was not a good idea by RH. The 3rd goal was the dagger and that falls all on AM. As a keeper you need to know what is going on at all times and he just screwed up - period. I also agree with LordDZLucan about Ryan Bertrand. I think he hasnt shown up in the last 3 games and still fancies himself a left back at one of the big clubs and so he doesnt want to injure himself for a move this summer. I know the pitch was bad, but I could hear RH screaming to move the ball faster from side to side in the second half and we didnt do it. I hope he threw the kitchen sink at them after the game. Also, do our players know what the "Channel" is along the penalty box. I counted 10 times that a forward or midfield ran it and the guy on the wing (redmond or bertrand) didnt slot it to the line for a cross. It is automatic on the big 6 teams and yet we dont do it. If RH had any sense he would scream this at them nd the next guy who doesnt to it gets yanked and sits on the bench for a game. FFS. After all this said, I finally come to my wits end with Redmond. I was a supporter of his until this season. Yesterday he was lost at sea and useless. He had 1 good cross out of a dozen, flopped on two shots that he should have put on target and worse off he didnt track back to support the defense half the time. Well there is nothing we can do now about it and moaning doesnt help,. so I hope the lads have a good week of training and can put themselves back in to a proper mindset to win the next game.
