3 home games in next 8 days
at 09:04 8 Apr 2024

Coventry will be a big test.
They are a team that have proven themselves in the Cup and are on fine form.
I suppose we have to be solid and not give away a stupid early goal. They may have skilled players but if our team gives 100% and holds and frustrates them, then we can perhaps pinch a goal on the break. For sure the longer it goes without them making a break through the better the chance we have of gaining a much needed point and with a slice of luck even 3.
Coventry are not unbeatable and Saints need to approach the game with a positive attitude. We are at home and we need the crowd roaring us on for this fixture.
A win and we can really believe in not only reaching the play off semis but even going to Wembley.
Coventry is the first big game of many in the coming weeks.
There will be ups and downs but lets try and enjoy it.

I am trying to be positive.

TBH, I am happy we are in a play off position. Of course it would be nice to be challenging for top 2 but I never expected it this season.
We were relegated quite easily and I always imagined it would take two or three seasons to re-establish ourselves.
Who knows it could be longer. I would rather the club takes their time and gets it right than go up and come straight down again.
Also, the Championship has some clubs that are easily the equal of Saints in terms of fan base and history. We are doing OK.

Why things have gone wrong
at 11:29 3 Apr 2024

Possibly a simplistic answer but;

a. We needed to buy an experienced competent goalkeeper who could command the defence, especially the six yard area and thus instil confidence and direction in the defence.

b. A competent and experienced attacker (not crocked), who could instil confidence in the team that we were going to take our chances. Scare the shit out of the opposition.

Lumley must be given a chance in the next 8 games.

Let's see if we make it through via the play offs.

Yes, should we get promoted, then it will be very hard to stay up.

Another year in the Championship may well have been allowed for by SR as part of the long term plan of building a good footballing team.

Confidence is very brittle.
I think it stems from the GK.

I agree, Brighton are establishing themselves as a solid premier club. They have a good ground and have come a long way in the last 20 years.
The longer Bournemouth stay in the Premier League the more they can claim equal status. What they need is a new 35,000 stadium.
Also, I wonder whether Bournemouth are starting to gain more of the younger supporters, west of Brockenhurst who in the past would have supported Saints.
IMO, Saints status is naturally going to decline each year we remain in the Championship. Having said that, I think we will hold our own as a top 8 or even top 10 Championship club.

IN reply yo Kirk,
If Pompey come up and we stay down then the gap between the two clubs narrows.
That is logical.
We do have a better ground, by far and on the whole better fcilities.
Pompey DO have a lot of potential and HAVE been under achieving for the last 10 years.
If we get promoted via the play offs then the gap between the two clubs.
I stand by my assertion that we are on of the top six or eight championship clubs and therefore to finish in the play offs is an achievement.
As an aside do you consider Brighton and Bournemouth our equals or bigger clubs?

I think Saints have a slight edge over Pompey as far as recent history goes.
Saints have a better ground and facilities at the moment.
Pompey have a lot of potential.
Overall, Pompey are in the same category as Pompey IMO.

Well, the Championship is a very competitive league. We may have a high wage bill which will have to be cut next season if we don't go up.
I bet though, we will still be seen as one of the top 6 or seven clubs in the division.
IMO, that is not bad and we are about the same size club as many of those in the top half of the league.

I do not feel downhearted at all at finishing in the play offs. I felt this season we would do well to finish 6th or even 5th, so 4th would be incredible.
There are some big clubs in this division. Apart from the massive talents of Leeds and Leicester you have the likes of WBA, Norwich and lets not forget Hull and Sunderland. Ipswich are a big club, have won more honours than Saints and have a fine pedigree.
We are holding our own and to be in with a chance is a massive achievement in our first year of Championship football.
If we don't go up this year, we can always give it a go next year or so. I think fans have to be realistic in their expectations.

I know I am being repetitive, but I said that a play off position would be success. I have also maintained that we need 3 or possibly 4 seasons before we are ready to go up.
FWIW, the Sports Republic model on spending and developing young players, plus a few gambles, reflects this.

If we end up in the Playoffs and blow it, Who's at fault?
at 08:39 16 Mar 2024

If we go back that far, we should have kept Haenhuttl but SR didn't support him. It was as clear as day that during the summer of 22 we needed a top quality striker.
Sports Republic should have gone full out and been prepared to spend 40 million plus.
However they failed. Indecisive and complacent.
Ralph clearly lost the motivation and we began a rapid decline.
