A Rough Guide To Crystal Palace

I have fond memories of that ground, I took my eldest son to his first match there 30 odd years ago. Following an unpopular refereeing decision there was a certain amount of verbal dissent from the crowd but when it quietened down my son piped up “Dad what is a w***ker exactly?” The ripple of laughter passed right round the ground even to the other supporters!

Southampton V Manchester City The Preview
at 11:10:03

There is so much good sense in this article. I don’t want Saints to go down obviously but I really enjoyed us playing in the Championship, we saw many fewer overseas players dominating the results, there were more games to watch and we won more of them. All in all a very competitive home league. The money washing through the “big” clubs will eventually kill the PL. All empires have the seeds of their own destruction and this is no different.

Southampton V West Ham United The FA Cup Verdict
at 11:15:21

Spot on reporting. I'll wager there wasn't a single one of us who didn't think "Really" when we saw the team sheet but that just goes to show why Ralph is the manager and we aren't. Great all round performance and hard to pick a stand-out player though full marks to Smallbone for coming into the team and doing so well and of course the goal scorers. The only downside I see to this is that Mr Broja may have priced himself out of our market - hope not!

Southampton At Manchester City The Verdict
at 10:49:25

As I often do after controversial decisions, I had a look at what the other side’s fans are saying. Most of the comments in the Manchester Evening News are that it was indeed a penalty and that Saints put up an unexpectedly tough fight that City deserved to lose. I think that says it all!

Conspiracy theory - the manager told him to make sure he felt a little twinge during training to make sure he didn’t get seriously injured in the Poland game?

Southampton V Wolverhampton Wanderers The Verdict

A very good report in my view and a mature perspective. At the end of the day if the gods of football had offered us a win and a loss in the two back to back games against Wolves and the choice of which was which then I have no doubt that we would all have said "We'll have our win in the FA Cup game please!".

Southampton At Wolverhampton Wanderers The FA Cup Verdict
at 09:10:05

Good to read so many positive comments on this thread, I went through the Gruaniad's comments section after the game and was surprised how much criticism Redmond came in for - I thought he had quite a good game and put the Wolves defence under a lot of pressure. Completely agree with praise for Forster, he seems to have got his Mojo back, but for me, the jury is still out on Silisu. I didn't think he was much of an improvement on Stevens and there were a few heart-stopping moments of his own creation. Armstong and Tella should play every game, great to see their eagerness to get after the opposition!

Southampton At Newcastle The Verdict

Nothing to disagree with in this article, on the whole I thought we played well apart from the disastrous lapses of concentration but I do wonder why we insist on playing out from the back every single time. Agreed that on the whole it is better because it means keeping possession but there are times when booting the ball down the field or even into the stand is just the best option!

The new bloke Minimino looks the real deal, we might struggle to keep him but we are going to need to because Ings is clearly off form and looking a bit disinterested right now. JWP proved his value once again and we are very dependent on him just now so he’s another player it is important to hold on to.

Southampton V Arsenal The Verdict
at 10:43:08

There are some long and thoughtful comments on this thread and some very good points made but I beg to differ slightly: In my view, the team didn't play badly and weren't all that much different to Saturday's game. The key differences were that we had much stiffer opposition and a weakened back line. In the circumstances I thought that we did pretty well, and given the choice, I would rather we had a decent cup run than be one or two places further up the league table. I think the manager made the right choice.

Completely agree about the BT commentary though, in the end I turned off the sound, watched the pictures and followed the live updates on the Guardian website such was my irritation!

If Saints Are Still In Top 5 After Weekend People Will Start To Take Us Seriously !
at 10:46:50

In football as in life there are two very easy mistakes to make: under-estimating your opponents and over-estimating your opponents. If other teams and pundits under-estimate Saints then I say "good", that's just the way I'd like it!

Getting Fans Back Into The Ground Is Only The First Step
at 14:02:33

I know that we are all thoroughly fed up with this and long to get back into the ground, but Mr Johnson (of whom I am no fan) is quite right to say that we need to be jolly careful. I have friends and family who are medics and they all say the same thing about Covid- don't catch it. My son tells me that his youngest patient to die of the disease (with no underlying disorders or co-morbidities) was just 23 years old. Very scary.

Saints V Everton The Verdict
at 08:59:32

I agree with all of the above and only want to add how frustrating it was to sit through 20 minutes of boring Arsenal, five minutes of boring blather about boring Arsenal and five minutes of blather about how great are Everton before we actually got to see a short section of the game on MOTD2. Oh and they couldn't avoid mentioning the anniversary point (I know, I was there, I didn't need to be reminded). Do the producers of this benighted programme have any interest beyond their favourite six teams?
