Would Adam Lallana Be Welcomed Back To St Mary's ?
I'd rather Boufal be given an opportunity. I believe that Boufal under Hasenhuttl will be a far better fit. He's got the skills, he always gave 100%, but now we have a manager and beginnings of a team that he could fit into and shine..
Saints V Huddersfield The Verdict
Truly awful game. I never walk out before the final whistle, but left that one well before 90. It was end of season meaningless football at its best. I love a relegation fight, for the drama and excitement (see Spurs win and a half a dozen other games since March etc.). But when it's all over and nothing to play for............ yawn.
Big summer for Saints. I don't want mid table boredom but a push into the top 7-10. With Hasenhuttl and some backing, we can hopefully make that jump next season.
Saints V Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict
The ref was awful, but my first reaction to the penalty shout was; no, you're not going to get those. Vertonghen was just clearing the ball by hooking over his should, so contact was accidental for me.
Walker-Peters should have been sent off for tripping Armstrong up when through on goal and Sissoko was lucky not to see red.
Gunn made some good saves to keep us in the game, which must not be underestimated as it keeps us in the game.
Hasenhuttl was positive in making two substitutions at half time and changing the formation. We now had pace right across the from three. Sims was excellent.
JWP is now a real contender for Player of the Season.
The atmosphere was rocking in the last 25 mins.
I love a good relegation fight !
Saints At Manchester United The Verdict
It wasn't offside. The game can't be managed to such fine margins to rule it out when VAR comes in; it'll be a farce. The first pen shout was good but second wasn't.
Saints played well of course and were unlucky with the decisions on the day, but id rather the FA set about increasing the quality of refereeing or rather than what's coming with VAR, and consider a 'review challenge system' say two per team.
Soares Wanted By Italian Giants
The problem with Soares is simple imo. He's good going forward, but not so good defending! We would miss the balance he brings to the formation if we play with wingbacks (with Bertrand) as he's willing to bomb forward and overlap the midfielder, but won't miss his poor positional sense at the back.
I'd keep him (for now) because although Valery and Ramsay look very promising and have not let us down, neither are wingbacks.
Saints V Derby County The Verdict
Pretty dire game from start to finish, despite VAR, 4 goals and a penalty shootout !
Even though VAR cancelled out a Derby goal, it was farcical in the stadium. Supporters had no idea what was going on. And there after it kills celebrating a goal as you can no longer celebrate with any degree of certainty.
Saints V Arsenal The Verdict
A really entertaining game full of passion and fight from the Saints players. Hasenhutti's passion seems infectious !
As good as the game was, as nail-biting as those last few minutes were, what happened after the final whistle has not been seen or heard at St Mary's for a long time. My lasting memory of this match will be after the whistle with fans singing along to 'Just Can't Get Enough' (Depeche Mode), then the music stopped; and one of the most rousing renditions of 'Oh When The Saints' was sent boomed out across the stadium. Fans stayed to applaud the team and manager off the pitch. It was a moment. Perhaps a defining one; if we are to galvanise the players into believing and playing for the shirt.
Let's go beat Huddersfield now and get on a roll. The season started yesterday !
Saints V Watford The Verdict
We played well and should have won, but for inept officials costing us this one. I agree with the point above that a penalty does not automatically equal a goal, but in Austins case, it was a legitimate goal, no question.
I liked the formation and the selection. Although Armstrong didn't have his best game, he adds far more balance to the midfield (I don't think for example Lemina and Romeu has ever worked well in the midfield etc.).
Also, we FINALLY played Gabbi in his best position, which is wide, and look what we got! I thought Gabbi and Lemina were the stand out players yesterday.
We must now turn these draws into wins though.
Saints At Manchester City The Verdict
Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea etc.....its a different league and one I have no interest in Saints ever joining. The sooner a European Super League is created and they disappear from English competition the better. The greed of the Premier League and the richest of the country's clubs, has grown year on year on year, and football as we loved it (be it's the 70s, 80s 90s, 00s) has long since disappeared into that of history. Am I pissed off with our performance, of course. However, I couldn't care less if relegation to the Championship, it's a great division full of big clubs and big fanbases. I hope we see the return of the South Coast derby. I hope to see the return of our youth and academy players into our starting lineups as well. Also, imagine a league where 10 or 15 clubs had a realistic chance of winning it each year!
I will always support Saints and I have no intention to not continuing to buy a season ticket; but, I enjoy real football and not some marketed product, where unless you are historically big or inordinately rich, you are just there to make up the numbers.
Forget Bournemouth success this year or that of Burnley or Huddersfield in the recent past, good on them. Nothing will change, it's a mear fleeting high for them (just like Saints finishing top 10), and a nice story for this seasons media coverage, but only to be forgotten about next year when normality resumes!
Saints V Newcastle United The Verdict
It's funny how we see things differently. I saw a decent performance apart from not being able to stick the ball in the back if the net. We hit the post and the keeper made two smart stops in the first half. In the second we had 2 or 3 decent chances to score. On another day this would have been a comfortable win. Newcastle, by comparison, offered nothing. I also thought the atmosphere was pretty good in the home sections as well, far better than in previous home games.
We need to unlock the goals somehow though. Is Hughes the man for that; I'm not sure tbh. I've said this since day one; I don't think Lemina and Romeu together works. We need more drive from a midfield. Armstrong must come into the side for me. Austin is way off the page and id be looking at Elynnoussi as the number 10 behind Ings. Danny Ings works hard in a deeper role, but we need him leading the line now.
Saints Fans Need To Get Behind The Team And Stop The Hysteria
One thing I would say about Social Media is; don't go looking for the comments. Stay away from the #SaintsFC timeline, block anyone who makes endless idiotic comments; it makes the experience on such platforms as Twitter etc. far less infuriating!
Saints Need A Leader On The Pitch !
Bertrand has stepped his game and attitude up this season. I see no reason to change the captaincy whilst he is leading by example.
Is The Daily Echo That Short For Saints News !
There is loads of coverage, from the club itself and all over the internet. If you want information you can get it on any number of official Southampton FC social media sites, the clubs own website, let alone the endless emails received almost every day ! Bloke sounds like a luddite !
As for The Daily Echo (or any newspaper for that matter); it's all yesterday's news ! Don't understand why anyone bothers reading them these days. Their decline is purely down to printing and distribution costs compared to publishing on the internet.
Saints V Celta Vigo The Verdict
Good game for a pre season friendly. Celta are a strong side and the pace of the game was good throughout. A fair few positives to take forward from it.
