He seems so honest, speaks exactly what he thinks and always gives a fair, balanced assessment after a game. Plus he looks like he's got an endearing personality (people who've met him have said he's a very nice guy) but of course he obviously can toughen up in front of the players when necessary. I remember in the post-match interview for his first win as manager he said he felt relieved, with a big smile on his face - that part made me smile, too. He's also visibly happy in yesterday's post-match interview. And when you see that you simply can't help but feel delighted for him. |

Ha, please forgive me I can't say much regarding restrictions but yes it's the same all around the country.  I live in a city near Shanghai (an hour by train).
Yes it's difficult to follow a club on another continent and one of the major issues for me apart from not being able to attend games is the time difference. The UK is 7/8 hours behind Beijing. When I was a teenager I stayed up late on every match day/night to listen to audio commentary on the BBC website. We were in the Prem back then and I got to watch live Charlton games on TV a few times each season. Then we were relegated to the Championship and later League One and I'd be lucky if I could watch more than one game live every year. Nowadays, live Twitter feed, the Match Thread on our forum and match reports are the main sources of game information for me. But the time difference has become a headache as I find it hard to cope with the negative effects of staying up late.
As for why not the big clubs... I've probably been asked this question a hundred times over the years.  The short answer is, like I said I always have a soft spot for smaller clubs and in my eyes Charlton's achievements under difficult financial circumstances from the 80's to the early 2000's are as great as winning trophies in the top flight. We almost lost our home ground in the 80's but managed to get back eventually under the great Alan Curbishley. A few years later we got to the Premier League and became a role model for middle/small sized clubs. When I learned all that in the early 2000's I got really interested and started to follow this club. |

I certainly hope you will get promoted this season!! I'm not sure where we will be though. No doubt I hope for promotion to the Championship but it is really really difficult. If Covid-19 had never happened, I'd be seriously considering travelling from my country to England for a Charlton game or two. It was in my list of things to do a couple of years ago but because of the outbreak of the pandemic, I think it'll at least be another three years before I'm willing to take the risk to travel abroad....
I started to support Charlton since 2004. I remember we lost to you on the final day of season 2017/18. I knew it would be a difficult game considering you were in a relegation battle. I didn't know about Joe Thompson. Great article on the Guardian (and great videos). Thanks for sharing.  |

I watched Little Boy Blue first and loved it. Then I saw on a website which was similar to IMDB that Three Girls was listed on Little Boy Blue's page as 'TV series you'll also like if you enjoyed this one' so I went on to watch Three Girls. I have to say what was shown in the series was quite shocking....
As for Elbow.... I read a few articles in which Guy Garvey talked a lot about Manchester so I always thought they were from Manchester.  |

Such a great post! No need to say sorry at all. I loved reading it.
Actually I'm Chinese and never been to other countries. My knowledge about Rochdale is limited - I watched the TV series Three Girls a few years ago (which unfortunately depicted the dark side of the town) and was a big fan of Elbow, the Manchester band who once recorded a song named 'Jesus Is A Rochdale Girl'. That's all. Following Stockdale's career now gives me the opportunity to look closely at League Two which I'm not familiar with. I support Charlton and always tend to have a soft spot for small clubs/underdogs. I've also noticed over the years that smaller clubs usually have a more friendlier fanbase.
By the way - sorry to go off topic but I can't resist to ask about your nickname and avatar - looks like you're a fan of Dalai Lama? |

That is really good to know. I have a feeling this is the right club for him to start his managerial career, partly because of the fans (well, I'm judging from all the comments on here and Twitter). Some of the Sunderland supporters didn't like him especially in his last year there, laying the blame on him for their back-to-back relegations. But that was all baseless. He had different roles under their four(!) managers during 3 years, despite holding the same title of first-team coach. He did a great job under Sam Allardyce and had he not been good enough, Big Sam wouldn't have asked him to join West Brom last season.
A welcoming environment can help settle things down. Let's hope the performance will improve on Tuesday. |

I've watched every post match interview of his over the years and never seen him so gutted and uncomfortable in front of a camera.😢 Extremely stressful days ahead and if the team lose again on Tuesday the pressure will certainly soon mount. This is his first managerial job and he definitely knows he can't mess it up.
Thankfully you all seem nice and patient - that's really important to him I think. So fingers crossed things will get going as soon as possible. It won't be easy though... ðŸ™ðŸ™ðŸ™ |

Big Sam once said in an interview when he was at Sunderland that he left the attacking side of things to Stockdale. Plus the fact that their youth team played pretty attacking football under Stockdale for a few years, I think you'll likely see a similar playing style from his new Rochdale team. Considering Stockdale played as a right back, he will be decent at coaching players how to defend as well.
So in a word, there will be plenty things to look forward to and hopefully it will be an exciting new season for all Rochdale fans.

I can't say for sure but it seemed that Sunderland were more interested in appointing an experienced manager and didn't want to take any risks. Big Sam rated Stockdale highly but when he went to manage England, Sunderland chose Moyes as his successor, then Simon Grayson, and Chris Coleman, all of whom are obviously big names. I think for a young coach like Stockdale, it's best to start your managerial career at a lower league club. Sunderland were a huge club with very deep and complicated problems. The manager was almost an impossible job. Apart from Big Sam, all the people that I mentioned above failed. Plus the ones after Stockdale left such as Jack Ross and Phil Parkinson.
Well I don't know if he ever fancied becoming No.1 when he was at Sunderland but I simply don't think it would be an ideal managerial start for him. |

Thanks. Hopefully it won't affect his overall plan for the new season. Sunderland had trouble at board level when he was there so he probably isn't unfamiliar with such things.... |

Hi! I'm new here. I've been following Robbie Stockdale's coaching career ever since he became the first team coach under Allardyce at Sunderland. He really is a good coach and also a nice guy (I have never met him personally but have seen plenty of comments from people who have.) He did an amazing job as the head coach of Sunderland's youth team. You can read about it on his Wikipedia page - I compiled the stats of that part of his career on there.
Just curious as to what situation are you talking about exactly? Thanks. I hope Robbie has made the right choice to start his managerial career at Rochdale. I've read many comments by you people since he joined this club last week and you all seem very nice people. |
