2019/20 Season Review - The Centre Backs
at 13:22:33

Nick's had it in for Stephens ever since the League Cup final, but really went into overdrive after Hoedt fell out of favour and got farmed out. Most of us would agree that Stephens is far from perfect, but he had a great second half of the season and deserves a lot of credit, not that he will get any on this website of course. He fits in really well with our style of playing out from the back (we can only imagine what carnage would have ensued if Nick's favourite had been given as much of the ball). I just hope that the new lad won't be given such a hard time by Nick if he makes a couple of mistakes early in his Saints career.

Saints Guaranteed 12th Place ! But What If !
at 12:02:03

Nine away wins. NINE. Despite having a central defensive pairing who lack leadership, can't mark, can't organise and concede soft goals in every single match we play (apart from the eight clean sheets, obviously). How do you explain that Nick? Presumably we just got lucky nine times?

Saints At Bournemouth The Verdict

Excellent summary Nick. Good to see VAR doing its job. Without it we would have been robbed of two points by what turned out to be a fairly clear offside. The potential implications to Watford and Villa would have been immeasurably greater.

Saints Closing In On Salisu But Youth Is Not The Solution In The Centre Of Defence
at 16:44:58

This is a fascinating new development. Not only is Nick slagging off our current central defenders, he's now having a pop at one we haven't even signed yet. I reckon Nick must cry himself to sleep at night underneath his Wesley Hoedt duvet cover.

Saints At Manchester United The Verdict

Nick, you've been constantly moaning about Stephens and Bednarek all season. It dominates every single preview and match report you write (even when we get a great result, bizarrely). It is obviously something that obsesses you, although you seem to be ploughing a lone furrow most of the time. The defending throughout the Premier League at the moment is pretty poor; our two are certainly no worse than many others, most of whom cost tens of millions more. Why not just enjoy the moment, accept the odd mistake from our defenders, appreciate them when they play well, acknowledge the skill of the opposition when they score a great goal against us. Honestly, you'll feel much better for it.

Saints At Everton The Verdict

Nick has banged on about the central defenders for so long now maybe it's time he redirected his disappointment at the manager who picks them every week, or Southampton FC who, for three and a half years (as he repeatedly tells us), have mysteriously failed to go out and find anything better. Nick obviously knows better than the club. I've almost reached the point now where I wish Saints would get Hoedt back off loan for a few matches just so Nick can see how lucky we are to have Bednarek and Stephens.

How has Nick coped over the past few months without Bednarek and Stephens to take his frustration out on? Looking at the table, if you take away the Leicester fiasco (difficult I know), our GD isn't actually that bad.

Premier League Clubs Want Relegation Scrapped
at 10:03:33

I don't blame the clubs at all. Getting relegated is bad enough, but getting relegated when the rules have changed three quarters of the way through the season will be very hard to take. The matches in Germany so far have shown that the lack of crowds has almost certainly had an effect on results.

Dont Blame Southampton FC For Project Restart !
at 11:01:45

Of course a football forum editor wants football to return. Not many others seem that bothered. If it wasn't for the fact that Saints could conceivably go bust without the final lot of TV money, and the fact that so many people rely on football clubs for their employment, it would be quite amusing to see an industry that is so dripping in money and greed suddenly implode. This crisis should act as a dire warning to football, but it almost certainly won't.

Premier League In Advanced Talks To Resume Football
at 11:51:59

It has nothing to do with public safety, or player safety for that matter, or who wins the league or gets relegated, it's purely down to the Premier League being desperate to finish the season so the broadcasters can't withhold their money. I've always wondered what would happen if the money dried up and we may be about to find out.

How come certain other players never get named and shamed when they have shockers? PEH passed the ball to the opposition so many times yesterday I wouldn't have been surprised if WH had given him their MoM award. Criticise those you don't like by all means Nick, but don't leave out those who equally contribute to a poor team performance.

Nick, not sure if you noticed but the transfer window's closed, so we won't be acquiring that mythical central defender of your dreams. Probably time to let it go.

Leicester City Want Vestergaard

Strangely enough, this has happened before and it involved Saints. Dave McLaren let in nine against Saints in the Sixties and we signed him a year later. Don't think it ended that well as he only played 20 or so games for us.

Can Saints Challenge For A European Spot ?
at 11:29:40

Nick, this obsession with our central defence is becoming boring. We could get into the Champions League and you'd still be slagging them off. With our limited (or non-existent) transfer budget who would you actually get in to replace Stephens & Bednarek?

Saints V Wolverhampton Wanderers The Verdict
at 11:57:59

Our midfield has been fantastic in recent weeks but I thought they ran out of steam in the second half yesterday and, as Saintmark1976 correctly pointed out, they gave the defence little or no protection at times and Wolves took full advantage (watch PEH closely when Wolves score their winner - he ambles along with his arm in the air appealing for offside instead of charging back to help out). That said, considering the great run we've been on it's probably a bit harsh to criticise anyone.

Saints V West Ham United The Verdict
at 12:50:59

How can a match report on yesterday's game not mention how terrible PEH was? Nick constantly berates our defenders for not marking, but when a professional footballer can't trap a ball or pass it to his own side surely that is just as worthy of criticism. The only difference is that if a midfielder makes a terrible mistake he often gets bailed out by someone else. The defenders usually don't have that luxury. Reading most of Nicks reports it's almost as if we'd be champions league material if we had a couple of decent defenders; I'm not sure when the penny will finally drop that our problems exist all over the pitch (and beyond).

Saints At Everton The Verdict
at 15:48:34

Sorry Nick, I thought Stephens did well yesterday. At least he showed a bit of attacking intent, especially in the first half. I really think you need to look beyond our own penalty area to see the extent of our troubles. We have somehow landed ourselves with the slowest, least creative and most uninspiring midfield that most of us can ever remember. There's no creativity whatesoever. They offer nothing going forward and absolutely no protection to our beleaguered defence. Romeu and JWP look totally shot. Maybe it's because they just need a rest but from what I can see they have to play because there is literally no-one else. The club's dreadful transfer record on defenders is well documented but its chronic failure to bring in any creative midfield players is, I feel, just as big a factor in our current predicament.
