Ralph Hails Stephens As A Leader
Never one to miss a chance to slag off Yoshida Nick. Your article on him the other day was also very negative about him. It makes me wonder if you had some bad sushi or something. Stephens has stepped up to the plate but in the past has made far more mistakes that cost us games than Maya and although confident on the ball does not always distribute well. You also conveniently forgot that Yoshida has been a first choice regular more often than you want to admit and apart from Gabbiadini was our best player in the cup final 2 years ago.

Agree we need some sort of settled side with Bertrand back in, but can't agree with your asessment of Danso as someone who hasn't done much wrong. Of his appearences I would say he had one game at left back he payed well, one game at left back he played OKish and the rest of the time he has looked like a donkey wearing roller skates! I blame none of this on him as he has been played out of position and his confidence is shot. I would go for Stephens and Yoshida in the middle as at least they have a positive 100% attitude and have been known to occasionally score. Bertrand on left and Soares on right. Hjoiberg and Romeu in middle, Dnepro or Boufal and Redmond out wide and up front Ings and Long to harry and hassle.
Board Shake Up Needed
There is obviously something not right in the background though I am not sure what evidence you have of the incompetence of the coaching staff. To me it is a confidence problem caused by Ralph's frankly absurd tactics and team selections. He is the one who chooses the team and the tactics and I presume sets the background to the coaching so having not seen a coaching session I would find it hard to criticise Watson Davies and Fleming. There obviously needs to be a shake up and the main part of that means to get a new manager who can actually organise a defense and form a settled team with consistent gameplans that the players can carry out.
Saints At Everton The Verdict
I think the problem is a little deeper than just bad defenders. For some reason Ralph has consistently played people out of position. Danso at left back, right back, wing back, Valery at left back, Hoijberg at left back, Cedrick at left back, Armstrong at right wing back, Dnepro at left wing back, JWP at wing back
He has lost the confidence of his players because of this and caused consternation in the camp. You could see it yesterday with players getting angry with each other and a complete lack of cohesion and a sense that they knew what they were supposed to be doing. It's not just the centre of defence at fault, the second goal was down to Armstrong not covering his man. Ralph is obviously a very nice guy and at the end of last season looked like he was the right man for the job but his bizzare team choices and seeming lack of tactical nous have me feeling he has to go, sooner rather than later and get someone in who can get the defence better organised, pick a settled team and play people in the positions they are comfortable at playing!
