Southampton V Everton The Verdict
at 16:32:12

After the difficult of previous seasons and investment in youth over the summer transfer window, my goal for this season has always been survival. With the inexperience, I feel if we survive this season then we can kick on and do well in future seasons. But, while we started the season well and may not have deserved to lose these three games, lose them we did.

I've been firmly in the keep Hassenhuttl camp up until now, but with the reports of him not talking to players I'm starting to feel that we may need a fresh start with a new manager. I'm just not sure who that manager might be.

Ralph Hasenhuttl Lambasted By Some Saints Fans As Pochettino Is Linked
at 12:50:56

I think that, barring disastrous performances, they'll at least give Hassenhuttl the season. A new owner can want to stamp their mark on the team (a la Chelsea), but it feels like enough people in the club hierarchy are the same people that were patient with the 9-0 losses.

Given previous underinvestment and league finishes I think the goal this year is survival. Then with a young and revamped squad we push on next season.

Irony Not Lost As Le Tissier Steps Down As Southampton FC Ambassador
at 15:15:51

I don't think MLT has been silenced, he's just stepped down as an official Ambassador to the club. He's welcome to keep spouting his conspiracy theories, but his opinions don't align with those of Southampton FC and so Southampton has the right to ask him to stand down.

I'm respectful of debate and differing opinion. But not when that opinion has no basis in fact. There's no irony in media stories talking about Russian suppression of the truth and useful idiots like MLT amplifying that suppression of the truth by questioning facts. I have no doubt that the majority of current and former residents of Bucha would find his suggestion that the media is lying about the massacre there deeply offensive.

Sounds right. While they're unpopular players with fans, I'd expect Stephens and Redmond to start this one.

Ings Rejects New Southampton Contract But Nothing Changes
at 16:30:30

I completely agree. I worry we'll be relegated without him, but I feel strangely relaxed about the situation. I don't begrudge Ings his desire to have a final shot playing for a top club and I'd rather we had players at the club who want to be here.

If we get a decent offer then we accept. Otherwise he stays for another year. If he performs really well then he gets the move he wants. If he doesn't perform well then we probably end up offering him a new contract anyway, but on reduced terms. Adams looks like he's on the verge of becoming the player we hoped he'd become when we signed him, his experience with Scotland will help him.

Onward and upward, COYS.

Of All The Southampton Transfer Rumours, There Is One To Worry About !
at 10:42:07

JWP not getting the England call up is terrible for us. He'll be thinking about this options over the next few years and it suggests to anyone thinking about signing that it's difficult to get an England call up at Southampton.

Ward-Prowse is arguably our best player and I'd say he'd world class. He's talismanic and I'd hate to see him go. But I think the club would find it difficult to refuse if the right offer came in and JWP wanted to go. We have a lot of talent in the centre of midfield and some exciting young players that could make the step up in the next couple of years.

I can't see him choosing to go to Aston Villa though, however much money and however ambitious they might be.

Southampton At Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict
at 16:30:32

A good and balanced article, thanks Nick.

I think we would've got something from this game if Ings hadn't been injured. The midfield due of Armstrong and JWP was working well and Diallo doesn't seem to have the same confidence he did when first playing for us. But the change made sense to allow Armtrong to get further forward.

On the positive side, this was a good performance against a good team. I was really impressed with what I saw of Salisu.

Southampton At Everton The Verdict
at 09:39:17

We really need KWP back. Bednareck can't overlap so all of our attacks down the right hand side melted away until the final ten minutes when Djnepo switched in. I'm not criticising anyone, it made sense to keep Bednareck there until later in the game to ensure we didn't concede a second.

We also really need either Romeu or Diallo back. Armstrong can't play in defensive midfield. He's good surging forward, dribbling past players and picking out key passes in the final third. He looked a little lost trying to do that from defensive midfield.

I thought Djnepo had a good game, he worked hard going forward and had the best defensive game I've seen from him. I think he'll be a big player for us next season. Tella is growing as a player too.

I've always thought the critcism of Redmond over the last few years was unfair, but he seemed largely anonymous in this game and I can't remember him completing a dribble.

These Foolish Ings. The Rumour Mill Goes Into Overdrive About Danny !
at 11:14:48

The only realistic option is Spurs, but he'll have to play as backup to Kane and will throw away his chance of representing England.

Given Ings' age, I'd happily do a swap deal for Timo Werner if Chelsea were keen. Hassenhuttl clearly knows how to get the best out of Werner.

FA Cup Postponement Could Be A Blessing In Disguise For Southampton
at 10:40:46

I'd rather have seen Shrewsbury forced to play their reserves or youth team. We could've played our reserves with a couple of established stars like JWP. We have a blank in GW18 so a rest isn't really welcome this weekend.

Ralph Is Taking The Positives From The Arsenal Game
at 10:13:39

A point away at Arsenal is great. It also feels like both this game and the Sheffield game weren't too exhausting, which is a good thing heading into the Christmas break.

It's hard not to look at the table and imagine what could have been with wins against Arsenal and Man United.

I expect us to be competitive against Manchester City, and to maintain our good form over December.

The King Of The Scummers Is Back !
at 14:20:16

I felt our tactics were to use less energy in the first half. You could see we were pressing less aggressively. But Djnepo was responsible for a lot of our attacks breaking up, which meant we looked listless. The second half was a lot better, which I think is the first time this season we've been able to say that.

Saints Will Not Cash In On Danny Ings !
at 11:01:05

I really hope he signs and sees out the rest of his career with us. I wouldn't begrudge him another go at a top club with Champions League football, but I can't think of a top team he would be guaranteed to start at. If someone offers us £40-50m in the summer for him then we'll have a difficult choice to make, but ultimately it will be up to Ings and whether he feels he'll do anything more than sit on the bench wherever he goes.

Nathan Redmond Out With A Hamstring Injury
at 15:12:35

We really missed Redmond, even though he hasn't been top of his game this season it would have been incredible to be able to sub him on against Wolves. Lots of teams are experiencing multiple injuries, this season is really exposing all clubs' lack of depth.

Hasenhuttl Has A Big Call To Make On Nathan Redmond For Villa Game
at 11:06:58

I don't think Redmond had a great game against Everton, but he still made some impressive runs. I still think he's one our best players and is incredibly hard working. I agree he's hard to drop, but also agree that some competition for his spot should do him good.

Walcott Willing To Learn Under Hasenhuttl
at 11:19:36

His defensive stats are pretty poor, I don't know if that's how managers have used him in the past or his personal playstyle. Something is going to need to change in his game if he's going to fit into Hassenhuttl's pressing style of play.

Redmond Fit Ahead Of West Brom Game
at 10:19:41

We're a better team with Redmond. He gets a lot undeserved hate, but look at his stats.

He has the fourth highest expected goals per game behind Ings, Adams and Ward-Prowse. His xG per game is 0.14 compared to Djnepo's 0.05 and Redmond averages 2 shots per game compared to Djnepo's 1.5.

Carrillo Close To Termination Of Contract
at 12:33:36

Carrillo is the legacy of Pellegrino. He was clearly signed because the manager said he needed him to keep us up. I'm not sure we can lump him in the same category as players like Lemina or Boufal.

No negative feelings towards him as a player or an individual, but I will be pleased to see him gone to move us forward as a club and provide the opportunity to bring in new players.
