No, you also have to remember there was only one sub in his day and subs were rarely used.
Smith came on as a sub twice in his 345 appearances. |

Another alternative view.
He might have played more earlier in the season and picked up a few niggles that limited his subsequent appearances, thereby meaning the record was still out of his grasp. Unlikely, given his track record, but in the context of this season, less unlikely.
As you say, it's something of a no-win situation.
If we were top of the league and winning every week, this would have been a non-issue. |

It's not 1985 anymore, you know!
The pitches this season have so far been excellent, including our own, while I can't recall any of the teams who have beaten us having a plethora of 'giants' in their teams.
Granted, it might rain a bit more now. |

To be fair, at Dale he wasn't playing in a team that had nine men against an opponent who had pushed everyone up in an attempt to recover from 2-0 down, thereby allowing the nearest Carlisle player who collected the clearance to race the full length of the field with opposing players in pursuit! |
