Happy Anniversary Southampton Football Club
at 12:49:54

I love reading stories about our foundations. Without meaning to sound pedantic I wonder how many of our board or owners were aware of any of this. I feel like we've really lost our way since Markus.

Saints Name Their Price For Elyounoussi
at 12:41:54

Players do seem to kick on when they leave Saints. Previously it used to be those that we thought were good, and then more controversial ones that split fans and now ones we thought were hopeless flourish elsewhere. We can cite the weaker league competition, but I'm more worried we've got into the habit of stifling talent and are unable to get the best out of our players. One thing's for certain £10m whilst being a good cutting losses situation is not enough to buy a top quality defender. Just look what we paid for Vestegaard.

I'd agree with that team selection Nick. Although I'd have Long over JWP as he's guaranteed to pull the defence around to create chances for Ings.

Saints Linked With Wild Card Centre Back's
at 12:46:07

Like others on here I think we’re doomed already. The chances of getting the right calibre of player in and enough of them to reverse our fortunes and play as a team, whilst having faith in the current manager/regime feels like an enormous ask. I can’t recall anyone saving their b@cksides in the winter window – it just smacks of desperation. I appreciate how negative it sounds, but as Saint4Life247 says I think the board will have one eye on wages based on a season in the Championship. They’ll definitely be less opportunity then for the owners to skim cash from transfers as we’ll need a firesale to level the books. Then, we’ll truly understand where we all stand when the owner is forced to take a bit hit on their ‘investment’.

Board Shake Up Needed
at 13:33:18

I think it’d be fair to say that losing Cortese was like losing one of our top players, maybe even a few. The club’s demise was able to hold off during Koeman’s tenure, in which his top experience and management ability no doubt papered over the cracks. I suspect his decision to leave (as well as the £££) was because he genuinely knew things were only heading one way without further financial backing. He got out before the ship sunk. I feel less resentment towards him these days..

Board Shake Up Needed
at 13:26:39

As Dorsetlan states I thought the Gao administration was brought in to “take us to the next level”. I’m sure I’m remembering that quote on more than one occasion. One thing I certainly didn’t see quoted “was off the edge of a cliff!” As for being deluded, who’s more deluded the man who thinks he can buy a football club for peanuts (and a whacking great loan – I thought it was £200m and not £20m – which is money Gao was never going to physically have) and prove to supporters he can make a positive difference or a lifelong fan thinking mid table and a challenge for regular European football was a possibility? Again, I heard that target quoted several times. I don’t deny there are far more issues at play than the owner and that Ralph picks the side and the players should know how to win a game of football, but the lack of direction from the top is key to any business/company. I’m certainly struggling to think of worse owners in the PL. I mean there’s such a thing as “hands-off” but not interested feels more relevant. As Vanmans says we should be doing everything we can to get Cortese back. He was a perfectionist with a vision and if you don’t think this was the best period for the club in decades then again I ask who is the deluded one?

Saints At Everton The Verdict
at 13:26:20

I’ve accepted the inevitable relegation this season and as I said before I’ve supported the team through thick and thin through many a bad season, but I always previously had faith. This is the worst for me though because of the disconnect between the players and the fans, the players and the manager and the owners and the club/everyone else! As Saint4Life247 says our hierarchy are a bunch of amateurs. We’ve sold our crown jewels to a team that are 8 points clear at the top of the Premier League. They invested wisely whilst we’ve pi%%ed the cash away, instead of using the proceeds and TV money to buy 3-4 high quality replacements. We’ve failed season after season to recruit in the right areas. I can’t be bothered to comment on individual players anymore. There are only a handful that are worthy of their place. And the manager does seem like he’s fast-tracking his own demise. If we’re going to survive this and a financial hammering, then we need to get the manager out ASAP, spend big and pray for a miracle. Quite simply though we know that it won’t happen under the current administration and ownership.

Nick, I’m not quite sure why you think Gao cannot be blamed. I’m still waiting to hear any positives that have come out of his reign? We’re looking for leadership and ambition. What is our current 5-year plan, ‘scrimp and scrape’? We’re hearing nothing and seeing a load of rubbish. We hear about home country corruption and hear about horrific loan debts. And we see proportionately low spending on generally poor players and hear about the need to recycle to strengthen. And then we hear of coaching, recruitment and board changes and nothing to suggest all is not well behind the scenes. It’s hard to stomach and as fans I don’t see how we can be expected to buy into the belief that anything is going to change.

Rumoured Departure Hints At Coaching Shake Up At Saints
at 12:37:16

I know it sounds dramatic, but I think we need a relegation to get back on track. We’ve got so much deadwood to clear out who are just happy to make hay whilst the sun shines. It’s very evident the current set-up totally sucks and there is zero leadership at the club behind the scenes or on the pitch. Okay, so most of us will keep everything crossed that we can string some results together and scrape safety again, but to what end? So that we can spend another season aiming to scrape by? We’ve had three seasons of the season virtually being over come October! It’s too painful right now and I’ve never felt so removed from the club. Nick I know you like to refer to the struggling seasons of the 90’s, but at least back then we knew our expectations and our limitations who we were and we loved the players and knew that they were giving it their all. Now, I feel nothing but mugged off when looking at the players we put out each week. Back on topic, the fact we are sacking the U23 coach to make all right with the world again is just hilarious. I’ll always support this club, but I can’t pretend to have the same love I do for it in decades past.

Saints At Manchester City The Verdict
at 14:02:14

I’m feeling very mixed about Saturday’s ‘result’. I never thought at any stage we’d win, but with minutes to go a point would have been great for confidence. I’m also unconvinced about sacking RH. Yes, he’s made some (quite a few) bad decisions, but I’m not sure he has the coaching staff and players at his disposal to do much better. He clearly doesn’t trust a number of players. We nosedived after Puel (and before if you favour exciting-attacking football versus a cup final and respectable league position) before bringing in Pellegrino and Hughes. I’d be genuinely scared about recruiting another manager. The constant chopping and changing is embarrassing and quite frankly I have no faith in the board/recruitment team to pick anyone better, or who would even be willing to come to us. I feel like our managers are operating with a number of limitations. And we seem to have too many players just going through the motions, which is a shame because new investment is just a pipedream until we get a proper investor.

Little Steps Again On Saturday At Manchester City
at 12:46:37

Man City are beatable. Norwich and Wolves have proved that. Neither are flying high in the Premier League, but if you play as a team things can be achieved, and to be honest neither of those two are high on confidence right now. If I’m honest if we lost by a margin of no more than 3 goals against a full strength Man C side and put in a decent, fighting display, this is nothing worse than some better teams have done, so it shouldn’t damage the confidence any further, maybe clearing the run for some more winnable games. I say “maybe” because I’m not sure how much of a team we really have and if they’re strong enough to play as one and under the manager. If not we need a shake-up ASAP.

Saints Are Like Brexit ! No One Truly Understands The Issues
at 12:34:35

There are some good posts on here. And I have to agree with SanMarco that some of the stuff said about KL is vile and inexcusable. She didn’t ask for her dad to pass away or to inherit a football club. That wasn’t her fault. The bit I do her accountable for is the Gao administration. When I say “her” I mean who advised her. If Gao was such a stand-up guy why would the FA being using him as a prime example of failed due diligence checks on football owners in the Premier League? He was investigated in China, so we should have distanced ourselves from any hint of corruption as far as possible. I could not give a monkey’s if it damages his “face”. I want him gone. If we really were naïve enough to let ourselves get so indebted to him that his walking away would ruin us, then let it happen. Let another Markus buy us for a quid and take us somewhere. Otherwise I’ll “buy” the club tomorrow. I’ll just take out a whopping great big loan and leverage the club’s revenues against it and sell some players! If that’s what it takes to be an owner at SFC. I cannot stand this constant scraping of poor results. Just getting by is ruining the club and upsetting the fans. Football is not an ordinary business and we cannot go on like this. I don’t care what people say about Cortese, he was one of the best things that ever happened to this club. We all bought into enthusiasm and attention to detail. The biggest problem is we lost our owner who had the ambition to match him. He wasn’t just a Swiss banker Nick. As Landsdownsaint said he gave us identity and pride and we all loved the team. That couldn’t be more opposite right now. The other successful components of HIS rein were just part of his master plan. A well-oiled benchmark for how to run a football club.

Just to throw into the mix Tadic had his critics and a lot of people were glad to see the back of him. His stats weren’t fantastic I shouldn’t imagine, but he’s just been nominated for a Ballon D’Or. Is it just possible we manage to choke our most creative players with our negative football?

Newspaper Claims Saints Squad Missing Rohl
at 12:49:36

Could be something in it, but it's just another area of a concern in a plethora of areas the club seem to be struggling with. So far we're at owners, board, marketing and distribution, manager, coaches and players. We're hardly a well oiled unit moving in the right direction. You can slam Cortese all you like, but at least he left no stone left uncovered and monitored all areas of the club. We miss his influence.

Rather than drill down on individuals, I think Ralph needs to work out who the core of the team is and then fit the rest around that. I'm going to keep on saying until I'm blue in the face, but we need to go back to basics and stop f@rt1ng around with formations and get some consistency (4-4-2 - give it a go).. Find out who is up to the job and let them get some game time. Our current midfield does nothing to protect or link up the front men. That 'team' from Friday night need to man up and put in a display to go a fraction of the way towards an apology to the fans. Norwich beat Man C this season with a massively depleted squad with hard work and a good team ethic and Wolves did them too at their place. Stranger things have happened, but if we don't pull together and show a bit of courage then we'll be rolled over and humiliated again. We're not going to get the great season we all hoped for, but at least we can try and salvage our top flight status.

Absolutely ******* Disgraceful
at 13:17:33

Nick, I’ve got to say how you can highlight Yoshida in an utter shambles of a performance is beyond me. Every one of our defenders was totally inept and lacked any leadership or organisation. The goalkeeper’s confidence is shot and the midfield neither offers no support to the defence or creates anything for the front men/man. I think Ings was the only one for me who looked like he was trying and he got subbed off. Anyway, shuffling formations and systems is just like the proverbial rearranging of deckchairs on the Titanic. The iceberg being Mr Gao and his interest in buying a football club and spending nothing. In this day and age that spells disaster. Please, please do the right thing and put the club up for sale so we can look for some proper owners/investors who can offload all of the deadwood and get us playing football again, preferably in some no-nonsense 4-4-2 formation where everyone knows their role. Alas, I feel the scale of change required is now seasons away and a lot of the good work done under Markus has been largely undone. It’s very sad.

A good start would be the manager and players chipping in a week’s salary to pay the home fans back. Don’t know how they can sleep at night after taking payment for that pathetic show. I’ll never forget the ‘team’ who played tonight. Nor will the history books.

Absolutely shambolic, but no huge surprise. A tonking felt well overdue. How ironic it’s against a team that chose to invest in the season we chose to settle and let everyone else pass us by. Yes, we can sack Ralph (not sure we can’t after that), but then he will just join the list with Puel (who more and more feels like the only near success story), Pellegrino and Hughes. You can’t put a sticky plaster over a broken spine and expect miracles. We’re lost at sea and we need some proper owners. We need another Markus. Someone who loves this club as we do and wants to take us places. We’re currently a pathetic joke and the fans have been robbed, not only of their hard owned money, but of their pride. I was getting messages last night from people I haven’t heard from in 3 years, or aren’t even interested in football just to add to the humiliation. I can’t see a turnaround until this club gets bought out and we can start over. Fair play to any fans that stayed to the end. The club doesn’t deserve you.
