Saints Sign Central Defender
at 19:23:48

You’re not going to get the experienced defender you want, that would be Bednarek or Stevens. This buy today fits the buying profile, young and likely to increase in value. Ralph likes Salisu and Lyanco and this guy makes three players who can hopefully punch above their weight. Assuming we have no kids with promise (why not?) and Simeu is not thought to be ready yet, then we have 5 CBs, which is arguably one too many. I would guess Stevens is staying, why would he sign a new contract if he wasn’t?, so Bednarek may go in a book-balancing move. I don’t see the problem in this thinking as the club prefers young players they can shape rather than old warhorses they can’t. I won’t mention Gary Cahill again or you will get annoyed!

Saints Look To Bayern Munich For Central Defender

You’re still banging on about end of June bonuses delaying signings. There are plenty of transfers happening now with contracts signed now and announced now. They just don’t start until July 1st. Simples!

Leicester Interested In Southampton Midfielder
at 12:27:11

With a year left on his contract, Mo is in a good place. We let him go for nothing next year, sell him for as much as we can get this year, or give him a new presumably improved contract. It’s the latter his agent is after, but it’s the middle one which best suits Saints. I wonder if Leicester know that they are interested or is that Mo’s agent trying to stir up interest in his client?

Minamino In Talks For St Mary's Return
at 12:03:52

I think you are being a bit literal banging on about end of season bonuses. Anyone can sign a contract before another one ends as long as they don’t run concurrently. The old contract may well expire on June 30, and as long as he doesn’t breach it by demanding a transfer or rubbishing Liverpool, it will be paid up on or before its end date. The new contract, apparently with another club, may well start the next day but it can be signed now. Just like Forster’s.
Anyway, i don’t see this one happening as he isn’t young enough or likely to go up in value so it doesn’t meet our stated transfer criteria. We went against this plan once for Theo Walcott. How did that work out?
Here’s another thought for Nick to chew over. We need a proper defensive coach, Ralph having been a forward needs help there. Someone like John Terry? Or maybe Nick could research where Gary Cahill is and start that hare running again?

Saints Set To Open Talks With Fraser Forster Over New Contract
at 09:29:10

I don’t think you can assume that Cabellero is rated higher than McCarthy. A two-legged goalie will always start ahead of one with an injury. It’s not our policy to sign oldies but goodies with no resale value either. The problem with the scenario you suggest in signing Henderson or Johnstone is that neither of them will want to come to sit on the bench. Nor will Forster want to re-sign and not start. The more logical thing to do is to sign any one of them (McCarthy, Forster, Henderson or Johnstone)and then go for the best young goalie we can find who will be happy to be on the bench, would be a mid-term replacement and will have potential to be sold on at some point in the future.

Southampton At Swansea City The Verdict
at 13:33:49

I felt we would gave been better to have played three at the back after the sending off, as we are knee deep with centre halves and Jack Stephens could have been on the right side of a three. That would have meant we could play JWP on the right of a midfield four to offer both defensive cover and an attacking threat too. Two up top and a goalie adds up to 19 players I think!

B Team Omissions Suggests First Team Promotion For Summer Signings
at 14:27:39

If only we had followed Nick’s advice and signed Cahill we wouldn’t be curious about how good this kid is. We wouldn’t have been able to sign him because there would have been no obvious pathway to the first team. Also gives us the option of five at the back with KWP left and Tino right of three CBs.
All sounds promising to me…

Has to be the end of Shane Long I feel. He didn’t make this second string line up, came on as sub and still couldn’t get a goal against this level of opposition. Top bloke and a decent player in his time with us but time to get games elsewhere. Might be true for Obafaemi as well?

Southampton Still Have A Central Defensive Crisis
at 13:22:37

I don’t know why you bang on about experienced players such as Cahill. The club made its policy clear — they want players with talent which can be developed, be under 24 years old, and with luck can be sold on at a profit. And for a fee in the region of 10 mil. It’s all very clear. The Fulham lad and Forest’s Worrall fit the bill. Cahill didn’t. End of…

I don't think so… it’s not wot we do. We buy younger players with a potential resale value. We don’t do old timers we can’t develop. You’ll be suggesting signing Theo Walcott next!!

Joe Worrall sounds more likely…

Aston Villa In For James Ward Prowse But It Could Be Catch 22
at 14:37:12

Football economics rarely make sense, but can someone explain how Villa can ask £100M for Grealish and then offer £25M for JWP? I accept that our player is not worth as much as theirs, but only a quarter?? That makes no sense. If JWP fancies it then surely even he would be insulted to go fir less than half of Grealish’s value. And our player protects his shins properly…

Minamino Deal A Real Coup For Southampton

We gave Shane Long a contract because he deserved it. Probably a good influence on younger players and presence in the dressing room too. In both those senses we will miss him.
