Joking aside. I think Janny B is out tonight?? If so I'd go. McCarthy. KWP. THB Stephens Manning Charles Aribo. Smallbone Armstrong. Adams Edozie ( Fraser after 60mins) |

This is the primary reason we're missing out on promotion. Without him we have no other solid CDM, as the club gambled 10m on a Man City kid. Plus a keeper who's a better shot stopper and a pair of strikers who capitilise rather than miss chances.. Particularly when we are one up and dominating. |

Agreed. Our strikers miss so many chances its sickening. You can only imagine how many goals Rickie Lambert would have scored with the chances we created for the strikers. Neither are bad players but I guess I see them as more second strikers. Also instead of blowing 10 plus million on potential talent in Charles, we should of brought in an older experienced Cdm... Probably could have picked one up from a good championship club for a couple of million instead. |

4 straight defeats early in the season along with the Hull and Bristol City games were games we deserved to lose. For me it's not those games that have cost us as you can't expect us to win every game. Millwall loss at home was new manager bounce. Ipswich away was poor goalkeeping and facing a decent side that don't give up. Rotherham home, Huddersfield and Watford away and todays game stand out for me as the killers of our promotion chances. Dominating poor sides, taking the lead, but not finishing them off with poor finishing. Then waiting for the inevitable mistake at the back/goalkeeper. |

Hi SouthamptonFan, Like you I just back home with my very disappointed 11 year old. It's been our achillies heel all season in not capitalising on our domination. People will say we are the second top scorers in the league and Armstrong has 20, Che 15. But they both miss absolutely tonnes of great chances in games. Brooks decided to make a treble team of goal fluffers today. You could sense everyone thinking and saying the same thing..... Here we go again when is the equaliser coming. You are right this isn't Martin's fault. He can't make them better finishers. But his decision to bring on both Fraser and Edozie at the same time was frankly ridiculous. They ended up both on the same wing and in each other's way.. It was so bizarre. We always miss Downes when he doesn't play and if we were playing a half decent side instead of an injury hit mid table side, they would have ruthlessly exposed Smallbone's failings in this position...he's s just neither strong or quick enough to play here. Why was Stuey Armstrong still playing as everyone can see he's spent by 70 mins.. That injury has now ruined his Euros.. Gutted for him. I thought our fans were excellent upto their equaliser. After it went in everyone just basically gave up... I blame Jack Stephens. Brooks today |

From what I've seen I'd recommend Total Saints Podcast. It's normally put out on Sunday evenings on YouTube. Football Martin and MDV Southampton are OK, but they're more based around matchday and chatting to the fans. |

Nick, I'm not sure what's weirder. Your dark obsession with our illustrious Captain that's been ongoing for many many years. Or my developing obsession with defending Stephens. I know you like a stat to back up an argument as I fail to see the issue with this particular player., whilst you seemingly ignore or defend certain other players that should come under scrutiny. Perhaps there was a road rage or some drunken night club incident with Stephens that you're too embarrassed to mention. Anyhow here goes for Stephens haters. 23/24 Season. When Stephens features or starts we average 2.2 points per match. Without Stephens 1.95. Please correct me if I got that wrong. |

Of course we were singing Selles name, we won two games.. That in itself was an achievement with such a pants team we had last season. Any win was met with a joyous release as they'd become so rare! Naturally the defeats started to mount so became a useless manager.. That's the name of the game. He's doing well at Reading in rubbish circumstances so I'm pleased for the guy. I don't think there is a great deal of difference with THB, Bedders and Stephens. I'd agree Stephens is a little weaker with tackles and blocks but he's the better with his passing and general shit housery. |

Mara frustrates me because I think he's got talent, he just seems to lack the application and drive to stamp his authority on games.. Too lacklustre too many times. Manning doesn't upset me as much as many on here like your good self. Clearly Martins tactics make him look more vulnerable than is really necessary. I just feel for a freebie he is ok as long as we had other left back. Baz is the one that makes me nervous. Hoping he comes out Saturday and has a blinder and shuts up critics like me. |

I really don't care that much what team the manager picks. He could could play the tea lady and as long as we win I'm not too concerned. We all have players we rate more than others but ultimately I'm a fan not a highly paid football manager. If Manning, Mara or Bazunu plays I assume the manager feels they're best for the team as I'm sure he's had many a long discussion with the coaching staff. If they play badly he rightly gets stick from us fans and we feel vindicated. My issue is when a player plays well some fans will admit they got it wrong but many others have nailed their colours to a particular mast and really struggle to accept they may just be wrong. |

Nothing wrong with a moan after a defeat or crappy draw but yep you're right about the joeys on here who are never happy unless we win 5 nil every game. Like you I'm quite happy with this season and the style of football we've played. It's not perfect but show me a style that is. Last season we finished 10 points behind Leicester and 6 behind Leeds. This season has basically been a continuation of the difference in squad quality. As you say Leicester particularly have a far superior squad. I don't think our defence is too bad. Just think we need a better keeper and if Shea Charles is not going to step up we definitely need two quality grafters instead of our current only one in Downes in central midfield. Agree about Che, he should have scored a load more. |
| Forum Reply | Who Should Play In Goal at 15:00 4 Apr 2024
This.. Our goalkeeping situation is embarrassingly bad. To think we bought a 20 year Bazunu after he'd had one decent season in league 1 and basically said "right there you go young Gav you're now our first choice goalie at a struggling Premier league club... A perfect environment for you to blossom!!" The McCarthy situation is mind boggling.. 40/50k a week for a third choice Championship keeper who was mostly rubbish. Lumley hardly inspires when you look at his track record. |

Tbf to Martin he had an excellent record at Swansea beating Cardiff in the Taff Derby. Maybe the tippy tappy stuff beats the blood n guts stuff. |
| Forum Reply | Top 3 reasons to be positive at 13:11 3 Apr 2024
1. Stay in the Championship and win more than we lose... Equals happy Weekends 2. No VAR 3. Stephens to likely feature regularly, which means we get to read Nicks obsessive and slightly strange and amusing verdicts where he shorehorns the blame onto our illustrious Captain! |
| Forum Reply | Why things have gone wrong at 11:36 3 Apr 2024
I agree with this. We are way too open, Swansea under Martin were exactly the same. The tactics and style is quite entertaining and at times very pleasing on the eye, but it's a bit of a horror show defensively. We lack strength in midfield and we have a keeper who is good with distribution and coming off his line quick but is pretty terrible at stopping shots going in. The manager deserves to be partly blamed for this but so does the club as they knew his background. For me we give him next season on the premise that the new DOF sits him down and explains we need some pragmatism along with the possession ideology. If he's not prepared to compromise then bin him off. Stephens is an easy scapegoat. I actually think he's played quite well since he's come back into the side. The downturn in our fortunes occurred at home to Huddersfield. Although we ended up winning we were 3-1 down against a poor team. Stephens didn't feature. We then lost two out of our next three games and the only game Stephens played was the the win at West Brom where his clearance off the line kept the score at one nil. During our unbeaten run we got lucky at times, dodgy draws and last minute goals masked some indifferent performances. It's hard to see us going up via the playoffs. We look too mentally weak. Nest season we have to bring in a better keeper and a couple of experienced CDMs and CBs and hope Ross Stewart actually gets fit. |

Top player this season. 16 assists from left back, and now two goals. He's the good version of Ryan Manning we hoped for. |
| Forum Reply | Should Russel Martins be sacked if we don’t win playoffs at 16:42 2 Apr 2024
Definitely need to strengthen in the areas you've highlighted. Our goalkeeping situation is very poor. The Ross Stewart situation is just an embarrassment. The midfield needs to be bolstered with more grafters like Downes... Surely there's a few decent ones floating about the Championship who are desperate for the chance to prove themselves at a bigger ambitious club. If and when THB goes we will need a new CB as well. |
| Forum Reply | Should Russel Martins be sacked if we don’t win playoffs at 12:18 2 Apr 2024
Think I'd give him a go next season...appreciate I'm in a minority. Overall I've liked the football we've played, I just feel we've fallen short due to a two or three player shortcomings. He does need to except his failing is conceding too many goals.. The balance is wrong. |
