City fan here. Personally i think 2300 for early kick off on a sunday at the other end of the country isn't a bad turnout! You are trying to compare two different things. Yes city have been doing well for 5 years but do you really think this translates into a growing nationwide support? When the scum and the scousers play you, yes they have some local support going , but any excess is snapped up from the many hundreds of thousands of fans they have in London and the south in general, for whom getting to Southampton by 1.30 and at a reasonable price isnt an issue.
Another point, city's support is largely working class, and £42 for 90 minutes of football, and well over £100 total cost for the day out is a joke at this time of year. Not a dig at Southampton as such as most clubs, including city, are guilty of this. Something needs to be done collectively before true fans are priced out.
