Should Southampton Sell Jannik Vestergaard This Summer
at 09:45:38

Not sure I've followed your argument here Nick. If we buy a toby type, are you advocating 3 at the back? If not, are you dropping JB or MS? We would also require more than just JS as back up.

Why all this talk of playing Stephens or Ramsey at right back? Has anyone told KWP that he is now surplus to requirements? Perhaps I have missed something here.

Time For The Premier League To Unite And Let The Big Six Go
at 17:46:02

What a pleasant change it must be to write a piece on which we can all agree, Nick!
Yes it is finally time to call their bluff. Foreign owners, mainly American, have never grasped the concept of promotion and relegation. They will find out soon enough that dead matches, regardless of the depth of talent on display, hold no appeal. Grounds will be devoid of atmosphere when the presence of away fans is the stuff of memories, and the whole mad, bad, selfish idea will wither and die.
The worry is that the various authorities won't stand their ground, but will instead offer yet more concessions. The problem with that is that when only one side gives ground, the other eventually gets what it wants.
In the meantime I look forward to the day when the tail stops wagging the dog; the end of the process by which only those clubs with Champions League aspirations could set the rules and the other 86 just had to accept what they were given. Who knows, perhaps we could return to the days of cup ties being played to a conclusion, whatever it took, and the thought of fielding under strength teams didn't exist. Hell, we could even have a knock out European competition for all title winners. We could call it the European Cup.
We can but dream.....

Frank Worthington RIP A Saints Legend For A Season
at 12:11:30

Only the one season, but what a season it was. Full of unbelievable highs and really desperate lows. Prior to kick off on his home debut I clearly recall Frank doing a lengthy spell of keepy - uppy 30 plus yards from goal, turning and slamming the ball against the bar. Blimey, we thought, this season is going to be fun. And so it was. Thank you Frank - when I think of you it will always put a smile on my face.

Why Southampton's Trip To The Etihad Shows The Premier League Is Dying
at 12:53:00

Superficially Nick, I agree with you. Since its inception, the PL has systematically seen power gravitate towards the top. The League cup has been trashed, the FA Cup has lost everything that made it so special and every decision is now geared towards those who have serious ambitions of CL qualification. As you say, this was always the intention. A European super league would make permanent the disparity of wealth - in fact it would exacerbate it - and the best players in the domestic league would always aspire to sign for the breakaway clubs. However, with all that said, we would reclaim everything which has been lost with all the fun and enjoyment that went with it. Yes, I would vote for it, given the chance, with only the one condition - they take VAR with them.

The Two Sides To Danny Ings Southampton Transfer Saga
at 09:59:03

At the end of last season he was a missed penalty away from being joint top scorer in the Prem. and dreams of Champions League football were entirely realistic. The outlook is very different now, with injuries leading to a drop off in form - plus he has another year on the clock. Does a possible starting place in a CL dead rubber match really constitute playing at the pinnacle of the game? Better by far to stay where he is and be the leading light in a team which will, with a few signings made and some dead wood cleared out, be a force again.

It was good to see Lamina paying back some of that part of his wages which we are still funding. Handball aside, he seemed to have a good game. What a wasted talent.

Difficult Times For Saints ! But Not Disastrous
at 16:30:19

The most obvious plan B, which others have mentioned in general comment, is to give the tippy tappy a miss and hit it long. Not all the time, but just occasionally. At least this would ask a few more questions of the opposition who wouldn't then know what they need to set up against, as they do now. I see no reason why Adams couldn't play the role of Pelle, San Marco.

Despite Fan's Uproar Southampton's January Transfer Window Is Reasonable
at 15:54:04

The reason Maintland Niles went to West Brom, saintmark 1976, is simply that he could be guaranteed game time there. You may have all kinds of reasons to beat the club up over transfer policy, but that is not one of them.
Of more concern is the frustration expressed by RH in the Echo that the club doesn't have the funds to buy him the players he wants. This would seem to be the first sign of a fracture in the thus far happy relationship between club and manager. I hope I'm not over reacting.

Saints V West Ham United The Verdict
at 18:29:15

Not for the first time, Jermaine Jenas has got us worked out, commenting that we are always fast out of the blocks and threaten to blow teams away, but if we don't capitalise, teams that survive the storm come back strongly. He also said that we always seem to want to score the perfect goal, and he has a point. He did, however, say that he thought we would come again and qualifying for Europe was quite likely. This may appear to be using the views of another to save any original thinking on my own part - it isn't. I just think he is correct in what he says.
It was good to get Romeu back. IMO he was MOM in a game we didn't deserve to win.

Is Fraser Forster On The Verge Of A Recall !
at 12:15:15

If Ralph is thinking along these lines it would surely be sensible to make the switch while fans (in any numbers) are still excluded. The pressure on FF would be much less and the question of whether he has regained his confidence could be answered one way or the other. IMO in his first three years with us he was a far better keeper than AM ever has been.

A perfect example of why 5 subs should never be allowed. A maximum of 3 was enough to demonstrate the difference in financial clout between the top 6 and the rest. As to the game, Jermaine Jenas hit every nail on the head in his MOTD summary.

Big Decisions For Hasenhuttl Ahead Of Everton Game
at 12:51:53

Nick, you talk about the risk of burn out to Ings and Adams, but with no League cup or European matches to play, we are talking about one game per week. I'm not sure what the likes of Channon/ Boyer/ Macdougall/Moran would have made of that. Perhaps I'm just showing my age.

Huge respect to Ralph. He seems heavily invested in the club and its plans for the future. We could be looking at one of the all time great Saints managers if he is as good as his word and stays the distance. Thanks to Nick for keeping the UI show on the road, for ignoring the criticism and sticking to his guns. IMHO he is right most of the time! Haven't felt so positive about the future in years. Onwards and upwards. COYR.
