Leeds crash out of Carling Cup after first-half horror show
Leeds crash out of Carling Cup after first-half horror show

Leeds United 0 Manchester United 3.

In the end it was a tale of rags v riches,

Leeds back from the brink of oblivion against the beaten Champions League finalists, with a seemingly endless production line of academic talent.

Amongst the unknowns for the visitors, the names Carrick, Giggs, Park, Berbatov, Valencia and Owen had a familiar ring about them.

It took just 15 minutes for Owen to draw first blood on his first appearance on this ground for over nine years, His scuffed shot from the edge of the box caught Lonergan by surprise,

On 32, Owen doubled the visitors lead when his 18 yard drive beat Lonergan.

By half-time, it was 3-0 when Giggs finished off a move he started from a corner, ghosting past white and finishing with aplomb and it was all over as a contest.

To our credit in the second-half we held the shape a little better, saw more possession but never looked likely of finding any way back.

So it will be a case of avoiding the papers for a few days as the media go into nausea mode over Fergie's latest bunch of fledglings, pick ourselves up and head down to Brighton for Friday's crunch Championship clash against one of the early season pacesetters.
