Sousa Works On Spreading It Around
Sousa Works On Spreading It Around

Paulo Sousa says he is working on spreading the goals around his team as he looks for his first league win

It has not been the dream start for the new Swans boss.  Progression in the Carling Cup has been the high point of the four games to date - three in the league - with his side sitting one place off the bottom of the Championship as they head to Coventry for the next challenge.

And with Ashley Williams the only man on target league wise to date, Sousa admits that he is looking to stop reliance on just the strikers to score the goals needed.

Speaking to the Western Mail, Sousa said “We can’t go the whole season with just two strikers, but it’s not the case that we don’t have strikers that can score at the moment.

“They have that quality and, anyway, it is more important that we don’t just rely on the strikers for goals. That’s what happened last season.

“In the last game everyone was close to scoring goals. The strikers, the wingers, the midfielders, the centre-backs and even the full-backs.

“Everyone can score goals and that is something we have been working on.

“We just need to put about 20 or 30 per cent of our chances in the net. It’s difficult to create against teams like Reading and Middlesbrough but we did that.

“We had more possession and we spent a lot more time in the opposition’s half on Tuesday. It’s only the last part, putting the ball in the net, that’s missing.

“We have the quality to do that and, when we start scoring, I hope it will remain that way for the rest of the season. It’s only a matter of time before we score.

“The most important thing is we create. We have been doing that. We need to continue doing that and we are getting much closer to crossing that bridge.

“I wasn’t just encouraged by Tuesday’s performance but by the attitude everyone showed as well. That means a lot to me and when you combine attitude with the things we do in training, it’s easier to achieve good performance,” he said

“It’s not good enough because confidence always comes with points and, while this was one good one, we lost two. But we are close to finding our moment.”
