Saints To Play Accrington If They Beat Derby ! Exactly ! Tuesday, 8th Jan 2019 10:53 Saints will face Accrington Stanley in the 4th round of the FA Cup if they overcome Derby County at St Mary's next week. Of course there is the little matter of dispensing of the Rams first but if we do then we have a great tie up in Lancashire against the smallest team with the biggest and most well know name in the Football League. There isn't a Saints fan over 45 who does not hear the name Accrington Stanley and say the phrase "Exactly", this stems from an advert on TV in the 1980's when two Scouse Urchins came in from playing football and headed for the fridge, one of them got out a bottle of milk to which the other retorted Boy 1: "Milk! Urghh!" The second kid in broad scouse said "Accrington Stanley who are they ?" to which the classic reply imitated in schools and workplaces across the country always in an exagerated Scouse accent was "Exactly !" The original Accrington Stanley were formed in 1891 and played in the Football League from 1921 -1962 when they resigned due to financial difficulties and played a further four seasons in the Lancashire Combination before folding completely with their Peel Park ground going to ruin. They were reformed in 1968 and played again in 1970 mainly in tiers below Conference level till 2002/03 when they were promoted to that level. Their rise is attributed to a sell on clause they had when they sold Brett Ormerod to Blackpool and he was subsequently sold to Saints reaping the club rich rewards when he joined Saints in late 2001, enabling them to build a new stand and invest in the team, promotion followed the next season. By 2006 they were back in the League and have continued to flourish in the bottom two divisions. Older Saints fans will remember that we played them in two seasons back in the 1950's, 1958/59 and 59/60 winning both games at home and drawing both away. For those of us who are interested in the history of the game this is a dream draw, the prospect of playing Accrington Stanley is very appealing from both historical and comedic levels given the opportunity to keep repeating the famous advert ad infinitum. But first we have to beat Derby County and that will not be an easy task but if we can then there is no tie I would have wanted more in this round. Exactly !
