On This Day In History - 8th April
Tuesday, 7th Apr 2020 11:00

We take a look at the rest of the games played on this day including a local Derby that saw two late goals and left us feeling blue, but not for long.

Another busy day in our history and a few interesting games to boot, in 1972/73 we had an away victory that is always pleasing , a trip to White Hart Lane and beating Spurs 2-1, Spurs looked to have the game in the bag after an early goal by World Cup winner Martin Peters, but with 10 minutes to go up popped Mike Channon and five minutes later he repeated the trick to stun the future North London Yobboes the crowd was only 23,693 a sign of the times with attendances going down everywhere.

That was the case at the Dell and a survey in the football Echo revealed that most Saints fans were staying away due to a lack of flair in the team, Ron Davies and Terry Paine were now past their best and it was left to Mike Channon to shoulder the burden, but it is interesting to note that although the goals for dropped slightly the defence got much better only letting in 52, compared with 80 the previous season.

Ted Bates had opted to secure a mid table position by throwing less caution to the win in attack, but the fans were complaining they weren't being entertained, Claude Puel might have a wry chuckle at this thinking nothing changes in Southampton.

1978/79 was a trip to soon to be relegated Birmingham City, not a massive number of Saints fans for this one, indeed the 12,125 present was nearly 7,000 less than had seen us beat them 5-2 at the start of our run in the League cup some 8 months earlier.

An Easter Monday game in 1980 saw our UEFA Cup place challenge come off the rails, Wolves were the visitors and won 3-0, Andy Gray doing the main damage , even a draw on this day would have seen us jump over Wolves and Villa for a 6th place finish instead of 8th.

1983/84 saw the visit of Leicester in a game covered in the story of the 1984 FA Cup semi final played a week later, it ended 2-2, check out that story for the details.

Wimbledon was never a good game to watch, it usually had goals but the Don's were a cynical dirty side who kicked their way to results, this one was 2-2 in 1987, a George Lawrence header with 8 minutes to go would secure the point, an own goal was the other scorer.

We arrived at Hillsborough to play Sheffield Wednesday in 1990 a week short of the anniversary of the previous years disaster, I seem to remember the Yorkshire Police had not learned any lessons in the way they treated the away supporters, no real incidents their attitude was just appalling.

We were now in freefall after the departure three weeks earlier of Glenn Hoddle in 2001, Leeds were chasing a Champions League spot, the pursuit of which would eventually cripple them financially and send them into obscurity, a fate from which they have yet to re emerge, Harry Kewell scored after 9 minutes and Saints seemed content to keep the score as it was until 18 minutes to go before Leeds scored through Keane , a Dean Richards goal disallowed in the final minute probably would have changed nothing if it had counted.

It's been a bit doom and gloom in the last few games so lets end today on a high, after an appalling February & March had seen us drop out of the top 6 we travelled to Luton Town on the Saturday of the Easter weekend on the back of that great win at Wolves, Luton were rock bottom of the Championship, but still within sight of safety.

Goals from Jonh Viafara and Marek Saganowski both in the minute before the half time break sealed the game and took us back into the play off spots albeit on goal difference.
