The Football Supporters Association Welcome Government Fan Led Review
Monday, 19th Apr 2021 22:22

The Football Supporters Association is always at the forefront of supporter issues at all levels of the game and the formation of a European Super League has been something they have been lobbying about for a while and they now welcome the announcement of a Government fan led review.

The Football Supporters Association has issued the following statement:

The Government today announced the launch of its promised fan-led review. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport secretary of state Oliver Dowden told the Commons that the recent European Super League proposals left the Government with no other option than to act.

The fan-led review will be chaired by Tracey Crouch MP who was sports minister from 2015-17.

The Super League proposals were condemned by politicians on all sides of the House and Labour’s Jo Stevens MP, shadow secretary of state, called for the review to show “real teeth”.

Malcolm Clarke, chair of the Football Supporters’ Association, said:
“The FSA welcomes today’s announcement of the launch of the fan-led review and looks forward to playing a full and central role in that.

“The anger from MPs on all sides of the Commons showed that a handful of billionaire owners have misjudged not only the mood of fans — but the mood of an entire nation.

“For years football has appeased these greedy vultures by feeding them bits of meat but all it has done is heighten their appetite and make them stronger. Now is the time to stop that.”

I really hope that this is the turning point for football of when anyone will be able to win anything and there is no “top 6” anymore as when a season starts, no one will be at any odds to win the league higher than like 4 to 1! As the gap is just too big and these teams and their owners don’t give a toss about fans, just there isn’t greedy pockets!

Money has been ruining football for too long and honestly I’d rather have a PL without those 6 teams where anyone can win, rather than the boring one where it’s always the same, in which we have today! Whilst if they were to leave at least then it would make the league competitive and when the super league fails, all those teams and their greedy owners will ether have to start at the bottom or just end! Which is what they deserve!

The opposition to the ESL seems almost total amongst fans and administrators alike, and I have yet to read anyone coming forward with a credible defence of the plan, which has
"the same feel " about it, as when Kerry Packer created HIS cricket regime decades ago.

The idea that players from the "Big Six" may be omitted from the England squad for the summer tournament sounds.... " an interesting suggestion ", ands although it would rob the squad of some key names , I think there is enough strength-in-depth for Southgate to select a good squad .I mean we don't expect to win the thing , or do we ? - especially if the result ends up depending on VAR, or a penalty shoot-out.

As I wrote in my first response (on another thread here), the idea of having a Prem. devoid of the " big money clubs" , may have a detrimental result on the economy, but it will give more opportunity for " the other 14 " to have a better crap of the whip and even see a few newer names as Prem. Champions.

According to recent stats. the majority of Prem. players get around £40k -50 k /week , and it would remove the "obscenity " of seeing players who get £ 150K/ 200K week paraded alongside team mates who get less than half-as-much, yet still do an honest job for their clubs every week.

I'm every much " old school " in terms of domestic football and in my 60+ years as a Saints fan have seen many positive changes in the game - none less than when Saints "imported" one of the first foreign players ( Ivan Golac) in the late 1970's.
I think there is still an important place for foreign players in the English game, particularly if they don't demand such enormous salaries, but can still recall the time when the term "foreign " was more easily applied to those from Scotland and Ireland (!).

Hes the compromise because this is going to happen. How about the winner of the Champions League goes into the Super League. So 1 regagation per year. This would then not devalue the other competitions as much. A compromise neither side would want and therefore a Win.
