Just seen on social media that we are touring the states again this pre season. A two week training camp held in Chicago from july 6th with two games during the tour being against Chivas and Minnesota United.
Great oppotunity for our fans to fit in a family holiday whilst watching the super swans in another continent. I was lucky enough to be working out there last time we toured there and managed to watch the San jose Earthquakes game! great experience.

From Milwaukee. It is a bit random. We've never hosted a game like this before so it should be interesting to see how it plays out.
Milwaukee has a huge Mexican-American population and is only about 2hrs from Chicago, so I imagine this was a low cost for a possible huge crowd. The city has a huge following for the sport so, yes, it is a bit random, but not completely ludicrous.
Anyways, not necessarily a huge Swansea fan, but always enjoyed watching them play. I am beyond excited to be a part of hosting them in Milwaukee. For anyone coming, we will throw a huge party in the parking lot for the pre-game as we do with all sports at Miller Park! |
It's always interesting when they attempt to fit a soccer pitch into a baseball park (Miller Stadium, as in Miller Beer), I suppose the Milwaukee Brewers will be on tour that week.
It must be a good idea to try and raise our profile in America, and especially with the Hispanic community who will be turning up to support Chivas Guadalajara, maybe we'll find a couple of good young players as well. And it certainly beats yet another summer trip to Belgium.
I've got to say that I'm tempted to go to this, and see some American sporting events at the same time. [Post edited 16 May 2014 2:53]

How much do you think it's costing to take 50+ people to Chicago for 3 weeks?
Including flights, luxury hotel accommodation, transport on the ground etc. Most likely well over £100,000. This just screams glorified holiday. What are the players going to do in Chicago that they are incapable of doing over here? It's not as if we're playing competitive teams, and these teams don't have the financial power to be paying for us to come over or play us.

I suppose it is a pittance. But when other teams go on these continental training camps, they play big teams, financially rewarding games, games that expose your club to huge numbers of new fans and markets.
Playing a glorified amateur team in Minnesota and a mid table Mexican team in Milwaukee doesn't seem like the sort of thing that will give us the exposure and new opportunities a club of our new stature should be striving for.
Every pre season frustrates me in this aspect. Why aren't we off to South Korea parading one of their sporting heroes Ki all over the country? I'm not going to rant about it too much, I'm sure the people who feel the same way know what I'm trying to say. | |

When the Swans Board were first introduced those many years ago, I posted something on Gary Martin's site advising them to the effect that they needed to get used to the idea that nothing they do will be right. That's the nature of serving the public.
"Kibitzers" always know better than the ones who are on the firing line with sometimes very heavy responsibilities, but with experts to help them with financial questions, and football people to help them with football questions, etc.
And if there is an element of "holiday" to the outing -- which I doubt will be anything near the main aspect of the trip for anyone on it -- fine.
Finally, many of the "anti" opinions are based on supposition and imagination because there are no facts out there on most of the specifics of the trip, especially on those areas of negativity.

There are benefits of getting away from Wales for preseason training.
- team building (taking players out of their norm and putting them together 24x7 form bonds that would be appreciably more difficult at home). Corporations do these sort of team building - why shouldn't a PL team emulate best practices?
- For PL players having a bit of anonymity is a blessing as compared to their continued notoriety in the UK. Many European players holiday in the states because either they aren't identified or Americans give these stars their space. Can you imagine if you couldn't walk down the street without being yelled out; talked to; stopped; etc.?
- Teams need to concentrate on getting physically in shape; I submit that it's best without the rigors of everyday life's responsibilities. Being ready for the season is paramount - the cost is marginal ($100K compared to $100M being in the PL each year.
My wife are flying in from DC to watch the 2 matches in the US.

I spoke to Jenkins at a wedding last year and he was telling me then that the states is a market the club is keen to tap into. Hence our tour this year to boost our exposure.
I spend a lot of time over there and the premier league is massive. I think the club is absolutely right to try to make the most if this. The Asian guy we employed to boost our profile seems to be a waste of time | | | |
