Following a post where a comment suggested that the topic had racial content as we brought some of our ethnic players into the topic.
When does something get deemed racist? Is it merely mentioning race or colour or has it got to have a derogatory edge?
I read a joke where a young Muslim lad looses his mum in a shopping centre, the staff try to help and ask, what does your mum look like? The young lad says I don't know.

Not strictly as Muslims aren't a race, they wear that attire for religious purposes. That's not to say it isnt discrimination, just not on racial grounds. If you'd made fun of her skin colour then yes that's racist.
Racism is a term that gets thrown around to describe various forms of discrimination... like the word taff or sheep sh@gger, not racist when used by say an englishman to mock the Welsh. Racially there is very little if any difference between us... Anthropologists have debated the issue of race but one thing that's certain is that English and Welsh, for example are not classed as two separate races. Celts and Saxons may have been but Wales and England are not defined on those grounds.
Then there's the issue of light hearted humour vs insulting, quite often depends on a person's opinion on whether they are personally insulted by it. But someone else may hear it and take it personally, even if it doesn't insult his/her race... example - a colleague of mine years ago was pulled in because he repeatedly made anti Welsh jibes at me (apparently he grew up as an englishman in Neath and was picked on for being English so it left a sour taste in his mouth about us)... It rolled off my back but not off the back of a colleague who reported it... the colleague wasn't Welsh, he was of French African origin. He was not happy at what I took as banter and considered it racist. Fortunately I did not take it further so he got a slapped wrist.

I have 3 Muslim mates who I know would find it funny, but there are plenty of people it would offend. I don't mind Welsh jokes as long as they are funny and I'm sure there are plenty of Muslims who would think the same way. I think it's all to do with continuous intimidation.. if Darran said that down the Mumbai they'd take it well.. but if he come up with a racist joke every time.. they'd get intimidated and get him charged.. but if a white man gets continuous verbal intimidation from a black man.. what can the white bloke charge him with? an insult? |  |
