Saw him live around 10 times and genuinely would spend money I didn't have to get to see him. Sad day.and a chapter in my life over as I had hoped to see him one last time.
ps. Just watching that performance of 'Starman' on Top of the pops 1972. He must have seemed like an extraterstrial to a Thursday night audience settling down having watched Raymond Baxter talk about the brave new world of Post it notes and disposable lighters.

You dont have to hang around surbaban train stations with light ale, watney sevens , taking the piss out of people who dont want to go the local ritzy night club or to the working mans club with their mum and dad to listen to Engleburt humperdinck. you can join those people with make up , dyed hair and mad clothes that dont make you look like a mini me of your grandparents you can join those people who want something more. something better. David says you can.

Indeed ..I was a bit young to follow his look at that time. But fair play to anyone who actually did go for that Glam/ Bowie look. They say punks and Blitz Kids were different but f'ck me imagine a couple Ziggy clones coming into the Working Mans Club for a few light an Bitters.. Total respect...
That live version of Starman that Disco put up complete with the comments on its relevancy kind of sums it up for me - talent, charisma and a social inspiration.
Was just saying that, as far as I can recall anyway, I have never bought a Bowie record, and yet I loved so much of his stuff and thought him one the most extraordinary musical talents I'd ever heard. Unbelievable talent, and sad news.

You absolutely nailed it there Disco. He was one of a kind and I still hear his influence in lots of contemporary music. Most of my favourite lyrics are Bowie songs.
Very sad,had no idea he was ill. I used to hang around the Underhill rehearsal studios where Bowie wrote the Ziggy material.Lovely feller,his missus Angie was a diamond also.I was supposed to go on the American(Ziggy) tour as part of the sound engineer/road crew but I bottled out because I don't like flying.

Wow truly shocked by the news this morning, i know we shouldn't be because we spend a lot of time hearing about people with cancer, I attended two funerals last year and heard of a lot more people being diagnosed.
Somehow it's just a shock when it's somebody so high profile, somebody a lot of us all grew up with singing his songs and marvelling at the mans genius creativity.
Total respect to Disco for his posts, they summed up a lot of what we are all thinking.

One of those people you just expect to be around forever.
A few classic singles aside I can’t claim to be a massive fan, never bought an album, etc. But you’d have to have been living in a cave for the last 50 years not to know what a cool-as-fck artistic legend he really was. A phenomenal pioneer and pretty amazing that a working class lad from South London will leave such a legacy.
A mate was part of his road crew in the early 80s and was lucky enough to meet BD once after his concert at MK Bowl (must have been around '82/3. Like blob said, lovely fella and one of the most innovative and influential UK artists to have graced a stage, RIP DB
Dont lie ,even the coolest of cool cats out of you lot had a little jig to this one whether it be at a Xmas work do , A wedding or even just down the local when things were getting fruity..
