That doctor prog was very interesting and shows how pills are being prescribed as a panacea for everything it seems.

Shocking stuff really with doctors under pressure for closure after a ten minute consultation.

Anti biopics a ARE needed for bacterial infection but it's not easy to determine if the issue is bacterial or viral, so it's not a case really of us eschewing tablets out of sight.

Interesting to hear the possible side effects of both paracetamol and ibropfofen

"Anti biopics"

Me too - they are usually a disappointment. Jamie Fox was great in the Ray Charles one though.

Lots of profits in pills. Yet cannabis, a plant that grows freely, and has been used as medicine since time immemorial, is illegal. It's almost like there's a link isn't there.

I have no idea what this programme the Scouce bloke talks about is but if people had to pay for prescriptions in Wales perhaps they'd think twice about wasting pills.

Equally, Dazza, GPs are overwilling to prescribe as a consequence.

I suffer hayfever; GP gave a prescription - looking at it, nothing I coudn't buy over the counter. Sod that, pay out of my own pocket, why waste money that could be used elsewhere?

I used to suffer from hay fever, got a prescription once for an inhaler. Nearly killed me, so ended up in the bin straight away. It's the easy, quick fix for GPs to dish prescriptions out without having the time to actually see what's wrong.

GPs especially in Wales have the comfort zone of knowing they are free prescriptions.

Being fair to them, there are plenty of patients who DEMAND anti-biotics due to having minor cough... doesn't help the situation.

Go to a homeopath. You could swallow a truckload of the pills they give you and it wouldn't harm you at all.

Or a sociopath. Your request for a prescription would be met with a surly f**k off!

Not criticising GPs at all, rather the system that means they have to deal with a conveyor belt of patients.

I used to have private medical insurance with an old job and the difference in level of attention (from the same consultants) was staggering. I'm sure the same would apply to GPs - I bet they'd welcome the chance to spend more time with patients (or maybe not, depending on the patients!).
